How Much Grease in CV Joint Drive Flanges?

One thing I have not seen on Rcecale's Constant Velocity joint thread, on the VW manual pages or in the Porsche service manuals is this question:

Suppose I have the transmission drive flanges out and have cleaned them completely of all grease. When I reinstall them & the CV joints, should I put any grease into the drive flange area?

It seems like grease might emerge from the CV joint per se, and migrate axially as the joint rotates & moves up and down (at the angle of all the LWB cars, no less)... that would reduce the amount of grease the CV joints have...

There was fair amount of grease in each flange when I removed them from the tranny, but who knows if it was overpacked or not...

At first, I thought well maybe I'll just make sure the xx grams is there, but then realized that the Lobro service packages as well as the spec. given is premised on a unit that has been in service, not a "New" one.

Thoughts?

I don't wanna pack too much in, as I've seen what that does before...

These are 1973 flanges - they use a gasket between the flange & the CV joint.

I put a big dolup in each flange and added a little to each cv joint since they were brand new a looked like they needed to be topped off. I avoided getting any on the sticky sides of the gaskets. (my SC) No problems after a year of daily hard driving.

Yes. I usually fill the drive flange half full. The grease will turn to liquid and flow in and through the cv joint when it gets hot, which is why I usually put a quantity in the boot as well, and use boot clamps and gaskets.
