Info on compact engine oil cooler

Has anyone bought this oil cooler? It mounts below the oil tank. My hose is leaking and I am looking at replacing so I thought this might be a reasonable option. thanks for the advice,

Don't know anything about it but Pelican sells it for $214: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_ENGoil_pg8.htm

I have read others on this forum that had less than desirable results with that cooler. Consenus was a waste of money.

I had one on my 76 2.7 and it did drop the oil temp on normal driving in hot weather. If your going on the track with it, it helps a little but temps in mine got up to 250 to 260 after about 20 to 30 mins of driving hard. I did go to a front mounted cooler and now it stay under 200

I put one on my 73.5 last year. One would think it would help a bit given the fin area exposed to the air, but the proximity of the exhaust may reduce the effectiveness. I really have not noticed an appreciable difference in oil temperatures, still am over 210.

Greg,

I used one of these for the past year. I finally went to a real oil cooler up front, and removed the compact cooler. I don't want to bash the cooler without any hard and fast data - but I didn't really see cooler temperatures. Maybe it took a little longer to get hot, but my car still got too hot. When I felt the cooler, it was definitely warm - but was that from the exhaust heat, or the oil heat?? What I really didn't like about the cooler was that there was now 2 more places for oil to leak - and it leaks right on the exhaust. One end of this cooler is attached to the oil tank, and the other is attached to the vibrating engine. The last thing you want is a heavy object connecting the two, and trying to keep it from leaking oil is tough. If anyone is interested in buying one for about 1/2 price, I have one I just removed.

Wouldn't a quick look with a pyrometer at the inlet and outlet tell one if the thing worked?

I have the pyrometer, but not the cooler....

Cheers

Guys, guys, guys... that thing is tiny! what do you expect, the same effect as an actual radiator? I can guarentee that the inlet temp is hotter than the outlet temp... that's just physics. I'd also venture to say you wouldn't even notice it on your in-dash gage... I might even go so far as to say that you would see no difference on a pyrometer if you were at the track... ie: the difference would be less than 0.1 degrees at full blast...

There just isn't enough meat on it to make a difference... IMHO, buy the regular S hose and save up for a real cooler... at that price it shouldn't take long anyway!

Just my over heated opinion

Best regards,

Michael
