steering column ''bushing''?
Hey guy's , I finally aquired the correct ''spacer'' for the 930S steering wheel in my car and installed it , The only problem is now , the steering wheel is way ''loose'' in that you can move it in a lienear motion ( up & down) , about 3/8 to 1/2 in ?? Before I did spacer , it had no ''play'' , so evidently something ,( a bearing or bushing) let go? after installing spacer. I did not have to remove that big ''nut'' holding the wheel hub on steering shaft , either . Does anyone know what is in there that ''gave up'' , The car is a 1988 930 coupe., with 47 K miles original , however , bigger/ fatter tires , so maybe is why column bushing went out prematurily?? , I looked in Bently manual , and there is no mention of a steering column replaceable bushing/ bearing of any kind? Also , does anyone know where to aquire a new one , and how bad the job is? Does the whole column have to come out , etc, as this really feels taudry now , with all the slop on the nice custom steering wheel and all. thanks , for any advice

Assuming you have the same issue that many of us have had, there's an easy fix. Lot's of threads in the archives, here's one:
edited: url removed as it wasn't what I was thinking... I've gotta run...do a search on steering column and 928...that's the "quick fix" that many of us have done (tapping in a metal 928 bushing over the old plastic one), and it's worked fine for me...I have no slop/play whatsoever in my steering ![]() Last edited by KFC911; 05-19-2008 at 03:25 PM.. |

You mean this one?
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_Steering-bushing/911_steering_bushing.htm Do a search for "john walker's workshop" (that is his handle) posts on the topic. He has discovered that there is a rubbing issue you should address.
