Use a strong magnet taped well to a coat hanger (and make sure the oil tank is drained).

Works great!!

Mine is magnetic, I just checked for the fun of it. Livi is a doctor, Steve knows what he is talking about.

Dip sticks are not magnetic themselves. But they are steel and a strong magnet will stick to it as others have mentioned.

I have a spare dipstick that is non ferrous ( magnet won't stick ) it looks like a good measurement id 20 MM from the holder to the MAX mark and 26.5MM to the MIN mark

mixer911 - You have started 4 threads about your dipstick and oil. Don't do that.

John Walker asked you if you drained both the case and the oil tank in one of the threads. Is there a reason why you would choose to not reply to this simple question? Do you understand his question? Based on the intelligence demonstrated in your posts, Dude, I am not sure you do. You also dropped the dipstick down the hole. We all make mistakes like that but a little humility goes a long way.

When you do not respond to questions you alienate yourself pretty quickly. People will laugh at you like they have in your "I must be on crack" thread.

crustychief's data sounds reasonable. Act on that, assuming crustychiefs dipstick is an original 79 and you have the original oil level gauge. You surely have researched and found there is an early and late type oil gauge that you could have in your tank? Right? I mean that would only take some reading - but hey, "Please don't get up" - that is why we are here.

If you cannot get the dipstick out - remove the tank and get it out. It is not that hard.

Wouldn't be the first dipstick left in the bottom of the tank, Bob.

The learning curve for 911s can seem steep at first. A couple of books, ''The Used 911 Story'', and ''101 Projects for Your Porsche 911'' can help you get up to speed.

Stick around. You will eventually find the people on this website to be very helpful. BTW, Steve and John are VERY goood mechanics who would not steer you wrong.

The grammar and spelling errors are the result of gov't school education and texting.

By the way, you can purchase a flexible shaft magnet at Northern Tools. I have found it to be very handy.

No issue with grammar, spelling or inexperience, It is the bouncing around that is frustrating. Multiple threads, etc.

Focus and stay on this thread. OK, I am done and I did go a little overboard. Sorry.

I am going to go put my dipstick on a magnet. If it sticks, I will post a pic. Then go get the magnet as suggested. I like the idea of one of those spring claw tools but the oil level unit is in there and it's reasonably fragile.

Hmm -- the oil level unit is held into the tank by a handful of small nuts and would provide pretty good access into the tank. Removing the oil level unit could provide nice access to locate and fish out the dipstick.

Both dipsticks on my SC's are steel, you can get a long magnet on a flexible shaft at pretty much any autoparts store. I have dropped my dipstick in my race car's tank many times (don't rush putting the thing in the hole) and have used the magnet as many times to fish it out.. Other than an oily magnet and its shaft it's never failed me to get it out.

Just checked my 81 dipstick. Stainless. Magnet won't tough it. Of course, it is a different part number than the 74-80 so of no value.

No sweat.

Get that dipstick out. Did you see Darrin's comment about removing the tank gauge from inside the inner fender? That would take less than an hour on and off - and you get to drain the tank again. You may have to buy a new gasket or craft a gasket.
