Am I Missing a Seal????

So my car leaks air into the passenger compartment like a wind tunnel. Am I missing a seal that goes between the window frame and the door sheel metal? This is the drivers door looking forward to the fender. Check out the space between the door rubber and the window frame.

Thanks.

Did you check the side window seal? When I installed my new seal, I installed it too high and caused a 1/2" gap which caused a window tunnel effect. Lowered it and voila no more wind noise. Try closing the door then follow the side seal to that point where the quarter window goes into the door.

Some have put sealant there but I would check the Wind Shield seal first. my 2 cents

Darren, there should be a string of black caulk that goes there.....my guy used the the black 3M strip caulk. I did a quick Google search and grabbed this pic from this random site...I know nothing about this vendor

A couple of things I noticed:

In the top photo the window frame does look like it is not touching the door seal securely. It is possiple to loosen the bolts which secure the window frame assembly and tilt the frame inward a bit to secure a better seal around the door. You may wish to investigate that.

In the second photo, I have seen in some catalogs a seal which fits in the space in front of the quarter window. Also, the plugs in the door which access the mirror studs and the window frame bolts will allow wind noise if they are missing. That is not quite clear in your pictures.

Thanks guys, couple of questions.

Drago when you say side window. Do you mean the u shaped felt seal inside the window frame?

Bluesky-thanks, I will try some of that

Ossiblue-Ya I have messed and messed with the frame. I was looking in our hosts catalog and saw these seals and was thinking these might me the ones I'm missing.

Its the seal under vent glass.

The thing is when I'm driving I can stick my finger in the space where the dash meets the door and seal the hole.....wind noise gone! So I'm trying to get that pesky hole closed you can see in the first picture. Oh and its the same on the passenger side. Same hole same noise.

ossiblue 05-22-2008 11:29 AM

I don't have my car here to check, but it does look like the seal under vent glass is what you need. I suspect it would require moving the window frame assembly up a bit to slide the seal under the bottom of the vent glass and the seal would rest on the edges of the door, sealing the narrow gap there. Still can't tell if it would fill the larger void at the very front where you say the wind noise is entering but if the seal is missing, you should realize some improvement.

A penguin is taking a road trip when his car suddenly breaks down. Luckily for him, he finds himself just down the street from a mechanic. So,he pushes his car to the shop and asks the mechanic to take a look. The mechanic tells him that it will probably take a little while to find the problem and asks him to come back in an hour.

The penguin goes over to the supermarket, buys some fish sticks and vanilla ice cream, and spends the rest of the hour hanging out in the frozen section. After the hour is up, he waddles over to the mechanic's shop.

Seeing him come in, the mechanic walks over, and wiping his hands on a rag, says, 'Looks like you've blown a seal.'

The penguin blushes, wipes his beak with his flipper and says, 'No, it's just vanilla ice cream.'

HIJACKERS!!!

extra seals were added due to wind noise by the SC model. I have them installed.

RWebb 05-23-2008 11:47 AM

Hey Ron -- can you post some close-ups of the extra SC seals you installed?

- also any pics of the procedure; or notes (how far from X to drill hole # Y, etc.)

- a friend and I are both interested in doing this & would like to hear how well it worked for you in cutting down the wind noise.

Thanks!

No, I mean the Rubber Seal that is on the right side of the photo. There should be a small indent to cover that red portion of your wind shield frame. It appears your seal maybe too low and not properly covering that portion. I suspect wind is coming from that spot.

As mention 3M sealant should help on that quarter window but I bet it is coming from the area I pointed out. To test my theory, plug that area up or place your hand there while on the road I bet you will feel air.

The felt rubber is an L shape extending from dash level to top of window frame to where rear window frame starts. It came factory on my '77 but I'm sure it can be added to at least a '74. That's all I know.

for coups only

I don't know difference between 77-85 and 86-89 ??????????

I forgot how I attached the new outer seal? It may have been with only glue? My factory ones were shot and while I was doing door rubbers it was etc.

I can't compare it to No Felt as car always had it installed. No wind comes in felt area and I tested it with an electronic vacuum/air psi leak detector.

It was added at factory due to wind noise complaints.

I dont have the triangular piece in my rubber door seal. I bought it new off pelican a month ago and still havent glued it in place. Just to confirm, the 90 degree angle in the seal goes up by your head in the top back corner.....right? There is a 4 inch section that is solid and not collapasable. But this doesnt line up with the said hole. Argh
