All,
Which is the best oil cooling sytem update for a 1970 911? Here is a pic of my 70 911 ![]() Is is true a 72 thru 89 system will work? My current direction is towards a system with the: -rear passenger fender thermostat -passenger hard lines to front passenger fender. -passenger fender trombone loop or carrera cooler w/fan. Any suggestions for cooling are appreciated. Thanks, Paul & Judy

Hey Paul,
I have elephant racing hard lines and a Carrera fender cooler. The PO cut nice openings in the valance and I boxed in the bottom to trap the air flow. Last year, I also installed a fan and mounted a nice discreet switch on the dash from the tech write up on this site. Hope to see you and Judy again soon. Andy

I would agree with your thoughts on the factory set-up of rear wheel thermostat, hard lines, and front fender cooler--more than adequate for a stock 70 engine. As far as the cooler itself, stay away from the trombone, though it will work. I'd go with at least a 28 row brass cooler but the carrera style with fan would be the best. I also live in So. Cal. and had that set up on my 75 911S and it kept the temps consistently under 190 except in stop and go freeway traffic on warm/hot days--that's when I wish I had the fan set-up. In my 73, I have the factory plumbing and a Trubotrol (sp?) cooler in the fender. The PO had the car in New Mexico and claims never to have had a heating problem. I would only caution you that if you decide to go with the carrera style with fan, be sure there is room to install as the battery box may cause a problem. That style cooler was designed for post 74 cars that didn't have the protrusion of the battery box on the passenger side. One more thing, though I can't confirm it. I have heard that from 72 on, the rear wheel well sheet metal, close to the engine compartment, was slightly reshaped with an indent to allow the oil lines from the thermostat to lay closer to the inside and farther from the tire. I don't know if that's correct, but even if it is there are ways to route the lines to the thermostat to avoid any problems--many have done it, and I'm sure they will respond to this thread.

Good point about the battery box clearance L.J., I forgot about that and it may create some clearance issues. I have seen people cut out the box to gain the adequate room needed for the cooler.

i was able to get a carrera style cooler without a fan in my '73E with adequate clearance. at the time, I was racing my Pcar at Willow Springs (CA desert) and was really getting high oil temps. using stock oil tubes purchased from Parts Heaven, a new cooler and rear oil lines from our host, i was able to finish the job.
i had to come up with a solution to mount the carrera cooler which is shown below. of all the projects i've done to my '73, this was only bested by replacing my oil return tubes & heat exchangers. ![]() ![]()

This is a good plan.
You will also need a 26mm to 30mm adaptor to attach at the oil tank. And replace the 26mm union on the case with later 30mm union. with the battery box in place, tire clearance is an issue. If you retain the box, you will need to mount the cooler flush against the box. You can bend in the center of the stone guard to improve tire clearance. This is very tire size dependent. Small diameter tires won't be an issue. Rear tire clearance will be an issue if you are squeezing in big tires. I have special oil lines that route above the tire to address this.

It might matter - depends on your motor, type of driving & climate. Best for stop & go traffic is the best for high speed work or for racing.... see Bruce A.'s book for some guidance. If you have a rel. small motor (stock) then buying the whole setup with trombone cooler might be the cheapest way to go. If the trombone is not adequate, then you can put in one of the newer coolers. If nothing is adequate in the fender vent in some air. Next step is to add a center cooler. Next step after that is to add in a RH side fender cooler; hood scoops, etc. For concours the factory lines can still be bought new. If you don't care re concours, then Chuck's finned lines will really add a substantial amt. of cooling. |

Depends. I just went through this with my 1971 911E race car. I had been seeing 250F oil temps on the track, as of the last race it's rock solid at 180. I used a 30mm scavenge fitting, a custom hose from Chuck Moreland (Aeroquip AN16 Startlite with a 90 degree cohline M30), setrab 172 row cooler up front and Startlite up and back. VERY time consuming install, however.
Before you switch to the Carrera setup I would get the turbo fan pulley (see Grady Clay's posts on this) and make sure your engine cooler is clean and free of obstruction. Then and only then consider the lines-- Chuck's are the best for a stock-type application.
