70 911 & 912 paint code survey

Paint codes in 70 had three different suffixes. G for Glasurit, H for Herbol & L for Lechler...

What's drivin this here little survey is my missing paint code tag. I know my code is 8080 silver metallic but, which supplier suffix?

What has me thinking is that Karmann and Reutter might have sourced paint differently giving us different manufacturer suffix stamps for the same color.

Another theory might be that colors that Porsche picked out might not have been available from all three suppliers. For example, maybe all 8080 at that time was Herbol, i.e. 8080-H.

Lastly, maybe a color was available from multiple suppliers but, at a particular time they could only get 8080 from Glasurit. Since the paint would have been bought in bulk, it would lead to a number of cars built in the same time frame of say a month or two and in the same color. They would have all ended up with the same manufacturer suffix.

I need a lot of data points to try to test my theory. So, list your 70 911 or 912, your build date or VIN, Karmann or Reutter and your paint code.

Thanks Guys. My 70S is 1/1/70 and I know it's 8080. Cornpanzer's 70S is 8080-H. His is later in the year than your's sessa but, that's three now in my favor.

Keep bringing them on guys. This could turn into a cool source of color info.

I'll add my 70T to this list... Paint Code 8080-H... built 06/70.

This thread has helped... Paint code 8080 is listed for 71 models on the links to paint code information. My car is currently painted Polo Red or something... guess I should correct that some day... I love Silver!

Wayne.

Edit: The sixth digit of my SN is 0 = Porsche built body - Coupe, 1 = Targa, 2 = Karmann built body.

Michael,

I had this exact question when I re-created my paint tag for my rustoration 18 months ago.
I checked with Porsche Cars Australia and on their microfiche they had the 8080 number but the G/L/H letter was missing probably due to lack of space on the m/f.
I had the plate stamped with G as I reasoned that the S models were all constructed in Zuffenhausen with Glasurit paint ,whereas some of the Ts were assembled at Karmann and may have had a different paint maker.
However assuming the above plates are original,my little theory may not be quite correct.Until I find out otherwise,I am happy to have the G on my paint plate !
My car was completed on 1 March '71.
Check it out when you are down this way next !!
...btw,Reutter was Porsche by that time ...

Cheers,
Dennis.
