adhesive for weatherstripping?
What adhesives should I use for weatherstripping and carpet? I know there probably isn't one adhesive that would do both so I am looking for the best in each application.
Thanks, Bob |

3M adhesive #08001 from our host will do it all.

One is a contact cement and the other is sort of a contact cement. On the rubber, you want to be able to reposition at least once. I think the 3M brush on, or tube applied is the best. For carpet, I seem to prefer the Permatex version in the spray can. Both give you a little time to work things out.
Pelican also carries Wurth products that are tailored to each of these jobs. The black rubber cement looks interesting to me although I have no direct experience with it. |

I've used the 3M tube stuff with good results (hood and door seals).
Best,

I just used the Permatex stuff today on my other car... worked very well on the hood seal I was working on.
for carpet I was always told to use 3M for the best results. -Michael

I used 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive earlier this month to replace a door seal, and it turned out really nice.
I've used another 3M product for upholstery, which was a spray on, like Milt says. It worked much better than brush on contact cement, which went on way too goopy and thick. Either way, it is a good idea if you are going to be doing the whole car to buy a white deadblow hammer, or rubber mallet. The white one is softer and made of rubber vs. a plastic one, which might be too much. The rubber mallet will help you to make positive contact between the carpet and the glue without crushing the nap. |

A local upholstery shop that I use prefers DAP contact cement for carpet. There are two kinds, water-based and solvent-based. He suggests the solvent-based version.
