oil cooling
So I have an oil cooler sitting around that I wanted to use a couple years ago before I bought a stock porsche rad style w/fan. But I like making good upgrades. I want to use it inline. The cooler in question has smaller inside diameter inlet and outlet. My question is weather it's OK to use one with a little smaller inside diameter than the rest of the system? I just don't know the pressures inside that system and if it would be better without it or if it would help more than not? What do you think or better yet, know?

Tube ID difference........
Quattro,
The flow of oil to the sightly smaller diameter cooler is not detremental. The flow of of hot oil to the auxiliary cooler (trombone or Carrera) is controlled by the auxiliary thermostat operating in restricted mode (opening and closing). Unless the diameter difference is so significant to affect the volumetric flow rate, then you have to worry about it. Even the fittings in the some Carrera coolers have smaller inner diameter. The auxiliary cooler is filled with oil even at cold condition. As the engine temperature starts to reach it operating temperature, the auxiliary thermostat will gradually open up to allow the warm oil to by-pass to the auxiliary cooler and back to the oil tank. A good understanding in the operation of the auxiliary thermostat will give you a better insight how the oil in the system flow. HTH. Tony |
