Transmission Temp Switch

I'm planning out a transmission fluid cooler/pump setup for my new shortened G50 with GT LSD. This is a track-only car.

I want to use a temp switch in the stock location to turn on/off a tilton pump and fluidyne fan/cooler. Seems like a better solution than having a transmission temp gauge and a separate manual switch to turn the pump/fan on and off. Plus I'm sure I'd forget to turn it on and off in the heat of battle...

I'm planning on using the stock drain to feed the pump and returning into the stock transmission fill plug.

Is this a wise idea and at what temperature do I want to start the pump/fan?

Thanks

It takes ~30min in 90F+ heat to warm a g50 to ~200F. That seems like a good point to try to stabilize oil temps.

here's a nice setup on Geoffrey Rings car
-8 line, from a banjo on the drain, return to the top of the differential housing(hot spot),

tap for temp sensor on right, also has a manual switch

Thanks Bill.

One thing nagging me, how do you manage the transmission fluid levels in that setup? It seems to me if you filled to the usual "bottom of the fill hole" then when the pump switched on the filling of the lines, pump and cooler would leave the transmission sump dry. Kind of like needing a complete dry-sump system including swirl/holding tank?

Am I over complicating it?

Also that banjo fitting looks like a more secure solution than an aeroquip-style 90 deg bend but still very exposed. Any problems? I do occassionally "mow the lawn."

Finally, why all the tapping? There are at least 5 tapped holes in the G50 with plugs and sensors. I'd like to reuse those (rather than crack the transmission case as it was assembled by another pelican member/raceshop.)

Hey Bill, one more question...is that the reverse switch on the right side of your first pic? The switch that was installed in the unit as delivered is all bashed-up. It looks like a temp switch or sensor but is in the same location as yours.

The car & trans are not mine

the owner builder is Geoffrey Ring

the trans is a 993 6 spd used in a 964 3.8RS look racecar, Motec throughout

the switch is the temp probe, don't know that there is a back up light on this one

As I recall he said that there is an extra liter in the system, the fill port works as usual

I've always been leary of plumbing coming out the bottom too. It is certainly exposed.

Thanks Bill. From the PET, that sensor was originally the reverse sensor. Having a hard time finding 22MM x 1.5 adapters, sensors or banjo fittings.
