oil coolers

Hi guys,I would like some input on whether you think the cost of a cooler is justified in the N.E. where you might have 2-3 weeks of really hot weather a year in a car that will be driven 1/2 the year. It's a 2.7 in an early car.Thanks,T.C.

Good question. The car may be only driven 1/2 the year, but I'll bet those 2-3 weeks of hot weather fall into that period. As an owner of two cars with the 2.7 who is able to drive them all year, I would always put out the extra expense of keeping the engine cool and happy, and have done so. It gives me peace of mind and effectively maintains cool temps in hot, So.Cal.
Only you can decide if the money is worth it as only you know how hot the engine gets. If your temps are typically around 180 degrees and rarely exceed 210 degrees in your driving, I'd say a cooler is unnecessary. In fact, it's possible the cooler might never "kick in" in a cool climate. If nothing else, adding a cooler will give you some technical expertise if you DIY, added protection and extended driving days during the "hot spells", and a solid selling point when the time comes.

edit: The above assumes the engine does not have thermal reactors and the 5 blade fan. If it does, change them out if possible and if you cannot, the get the cooler!

well...i would be curious as to how hot your car gets regardless of the weather. That would be my metric.

How hot does your car get?

for that 2.7 you could pick up a used stock carrera cooler and save some money. Even the 28 row brass coolers would be good.

How well do you like your engine?

If you are going to ever push it, be kind to it and buy an oil cooler of some sort. Its good insurance for its living a long life!
