73T - 101 Projects - 36/37/39 - The Transmission
Well, after a long day at it, I have completed Wayne Dempsey's 101 Projects 36, 37 and 39 on my Gearshift and Transmission.
Project 36, Replacing Transmission Fluid was achieved by using my lift to raise the car for easier access to the drain and fill plugs, and by using the Pelican Website 'trick' of resting the Swepco 201 on a step ladder whilst pumping it in to the transmission with a Draper Syphon Pump. Project 37, Shifting Improvements is straight forward, even for a numpty mechanic like me :-) Just follow the instructions carefully, and remember that the 'L' shaped shifter bushing bracket sits on top of the tunnel and not under it - ask how I know (lost an hour fumbling around with that). ![]() Project 39, Installing a Short Shift Kit was done whilst the shifter was out for Project 37. Again, the instructions in the book are excellent. I used a towel to cover the carrier whilst loosing it to save the springs flying all over the garage, and wore safety glasses - good advice from the book. ![]() ![]() ![]() I have only had a very brief drive, but the shift is more positive and the movement is shorter, which is what I wanted. For information, the gear lever movement figures approx :- 1st to 2nd travel = 7" before and 6" after Neutral left to right 'waggle' = 2.5" before and 1.5" after 3rd gear left to right 'waggle' = 1.25" before and 0.5" after. I clean anything that comes of the car, even it it isn't seen, so the shifter, rubber cover, rod, coupling etc. all received a good hot wash and brush up :-) Whilst it may not be the biggest of projects, it was certainly enjoyable, and to me is a big part of my fun in the 911 ownership world - next weekend is the other bit, a PCGB Track Day at Donington Park - anyone else here going ? I have more pictures as usual here :- http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p33/Highfield_Photos/Gearbox/ Ian
