A noob needs help!
Hi everybody! My name is Vaughn (aka Studly Pumpwell). I've recently been infected with the 911 bug; that's why I'm here. I'm having trouble getting my rear brake calipers off. The bottom bolts in particular. Is there a trick to getting access to this bolt. I can't get a standard shallow socket and wrench on it. I can get a box end wrench on it, but can't turn it enough to move the wrench to the next position. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

That's gotta' be a pornstar name. :) Sorry I can't help with your question, but welcome to Pelican - there will be someone with an answer for you soon. . . (this forum is awesome and is an exceptional resource). Deeper socket maybe? Pics of the caliper would help. Your car looks beautiful BTW. |
I seem to recall using a box wrench, 12-pt perhaps, so that it was easier to make incremental progress. Of course, I could just be imagining things. :)

I tried the 12 pointer to no avail. I think I'll try to cut down my socket by 3 or 4mm to help squeeze it in the tight space. Thanks for trying though. |
The problem with that is, as you back out the bolt you will not be able to get the socket out. If you can even get one in there.
I used a box /open end wrench and it was a slooow process. |
Thanks for the input Ron. I probably would have had the bolt half way out before I realized that I wouldn't be able to get it all the way out with the socket on.

You have to start it with either a socket with a flex ratchet, or you can use a box end wrench. Yep, fingers. Get the other bolt off completely and hold the caliper just right and you can get them out. There's always some kind of pliers for these jobs, too, as long as you're gentle and don't muck things up.

I do not know if it would fit, But I would try a ratcheting box wrench (Gear wrench) once you crack it loose.

Good news all,
The bolts are out! I got them started with a socket and then used a box end wrench to finish the job. Thanks to all who contributed. Being new here, I am amazed at how much response I got with my post. This site is going to be invaluable to me. Vaughn |
