rattle noise

Hey guys, I have a rattle noise while pressing down on the clutch. The rattle stops when the clutch is fully depressed and or released. I have 1" free play on the pedal, the pedal assy itself has been overhauled and the pedal doesn't vibrate. I did notice the following: with the engine running,
car is at a stop- I can press the clutch select any gear and the is no sound.
But with the car driving the noise shows up.
Its sound like its some where in the tunnel area. I checked the clutch pin and it seems good.
what I did notice was that the clutch cable housing rubs a bit on the CV joint when moving clutch, when I was under the car
does this mean that I clutch material is worn and to get the free play correct that the cable now rubs. The clutch doesn't slip but it does engage close to the end of its release.

any suggestions as to what it is?
Thanks
Chris
