Snow Tires

Found some good studded 205-55-16 Finnish Nokian Hakkapellitias and put them on my spare Fuchs last night. Added 7mm spacers in the rear and backed her carefully out into the frigid, snowy and icy streets......

OMG!!!

Happy dog! My St Bernard loves the snow too; has paws like snowshoes.

Aren't studded tires illegal in a lot of places? I assume that here it varies by state laws? I know they are illegal in France because I got stopped there many years ago and reprimanded for having "les pneux cloue"

Can't beat the Nokians, we had a set of WRs on another car of ours.

I run Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 on my SC, got a good deal this summer - around $40/tire.

Now if I could only get MN to stop using so much salt..

I run Pirelli winter 190. They work well, for when we do get snow, which seems to be more and more every year. Damn global warming.

Just be careful the first time you blow into a corner on a dry road with studs. It's like driving on tungsten marbles.

I am using Yokohama Avid H4S tires currently, and seems to handle better than expected in the snow! They are all season, and I am considering looking for some actual winter tires, but they have been good to me so far.

My other set have Conti Sport Contacts and Coopers in the rear, all MS. Once this sub 30s temp goes away, I will put those back on. Very grippy but not like these Hakkas!

How do you guys like the new Studless Ice Tires (like the WR) ? Are they as good or better than studs but not quite chains?

We were running Michelin X Ice Studless, supposedly a very strong winter tire, but changed to Hankook IPike W409 with studs last season (recommendation from a Pelicanite) The difference is night and day... the Hankooks make our car feel like it's a 4wd, and stopping is also much much better. The State Patrol here in Washington run studless on those that run the mountain areas, but honestly I can't imagine a better combination than I've got right now.

Legality of studded tires:

Interesting that they are legal all year in Florida.

I am having a set of the Hankook W409's installed on my little honey's Benz today. Six inches of snow on the beach today. The Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S that are on the car now suck. The P Zero's are great in dry but hydro plain in wet and are terrible in ice and snow. The picture was taken Wednesday when it was 19 degrees on the beach

I have used studded Hakkas a couple of times years ago,..but for me Blizzaks,...like the ws 60 are really exceptional,..especially in hard snow and ice. Squishy on dry pavement, but still, much better than studs. I'd never go back to studs,...I just don't see enough strickly ice.
Of course, this is for an older Audi,...the 911 is in the barn for the winter.

I completely understand a lot of people not wanting to run studs, or not being in a state that allows them, or the weather just isn't right for them.

We run our kids in Eastern Washington to a lot of ski racing events from late November to early April. It's every weekend.... We encounter a lot of ice on a regular basis and our cabin is very remote, and it will be packed snow and ice till at least early March on our local roads there.

If we were in Western Wa and just skied the local mountain, we would probably just run the Hankooks without studs....

Tsunamiboy, give us a report when you've had a chance to drive on them for a few days!

cheers,
Eric

Haha, this makes the Oregon Coast look like Mailbu. Little do they know its butt cold especially now that chains are required to get out there!! Great pic!
