heater controls

I'm new to 6 cylinder Porsches and need some help. I bought a 1988 Carrera without an owners manual. Problem is, the heater always seems to be on and I don't know where to set all the knobs and switches to turn it off. The stuff between the seats seems pretty simple, both levers down, rotary switch set to "0" but where do I place the dashboard levers? What does each of the levers do? Once I do hit the right combination and the heat is STILL on, what do I do? Thanks.

If both levers are down and the knob set to 0 then the butterfly valves back by the transaxle are probably stuck closed.

The dashboard levers just control the direction of the air and not the temperature.

Here is a picture of the flapper box with the valve open allowing the hot air to exit before getting up to the cabin.

If pictured above when the levers are down, you are good. If closed ( even partially ) with levers up, you will get heat, if fully open the heat from the engine will be vented out as designed.

Have a helper control the levers while you are down there. Please use jack stand inconjunction with the jack/lift for safety.

Thanks a million. I'll get under the car this weekend and check it out.
