testing the alternator light...

I know this sounds silly but I have a feeling my alternator light on the dash may not be working properly. I had some alternator problems and replaced the alternator already. After replacing it, i was like man....i think the light should have come on when the voltage was so low with the old alternator!

so here's what i'm thinking. Can I disconnect the fan/alternator belt and start the car? I'm assuming then that the alternator light will go on. correct? Of course i'd only run it for a minute or two...not like go driving down the street or anything. ;)

Does it go on when you turn the ignition on without starting the car?
