First drive with the new addition
 

Just picked up this car a couple of days ago and took it for its first spirited drive on some twisty roads.

She's a '76 911 non-sunroof coupe with a few mods. Steel SC flares, yellowbird f/g bumpers, 935 mirrors, resprayed Speed Yellow, all new glass and door seals, engine and gearbox rebuilt at some time fairly recently, lowered with bigger torsion bars (don't know the size) and Bilstein Sport dampers, strut bar, power seats, 15x7+8 Fuchs with Yokohama 048s, momo wheel and hmm that's most of it! Engine is the standard 2.7 with good headstuds and no leaks or smoke, gearbox is the stock 4 speed.

The car handles very, very well. Feels a lot lighter than my Carrera and corners nice and flat. Obviously power is not quite so abundant and with the 4-speed ratios it's hard to keep the engine in its powerband on the upshift, or rather it's not really possible.

Projects on the horizon are headers/muffler replacement, A/C and Heater delete, Radio delete, interior cleanup. A bit later on, rear seat delete, RS carpets, RS door panels and a cage or rollbar, and race seats/harnesses.

BUT---it has a 4 speed, stock? Only Turbo 911's came with 4 speed gearboxes until 89 anyway, I thought.

just need to find an SC wrecked in the front with a good 3.0 and a 5 speed or a used 911 transaxle.

The standard was 4 speeds for years, even though like 99% of people got 5 speeds. Christien's 915 rebuild thread is a 4 speed 915. 901s also came in 4 speed. It was kind of a "comfort" option for rich guys that can't drive and don't want to bother to shift.

As Johnny Carson used to say, " I did not know that".


Thanks for supplying the info. In all of the years ,work and time spent on Pelican on 911's I have never heard that fact about a 4 speed/915.

John - it is in fact LHD and you might have seen it on Carpoint or ebay. It is an ex-Japan car. The Carrera is coming along nicely. Paint is done, so it is now being reassembled and then we'll have a look at the rear suspension which may have taken some damage. Oh and I met some friends of yours from the Sunshine Coast on Saturday - from your fishcop days - Karen & Grant. They say hello.

waynesco1 - the 935 mirrors are pretty small, but not completely useless as long as you adjust them just right. And they are light and look great. For a daily driver I would probably not recommend them, but for a weekend/track car - why not?

Oh Haha - I had the same initial reaction. I thought 4 speeds were only available on early longhoods and that 5 speeds were standard from 74 on. Researched it a bit and found 4 speeds were standard on quite a lot of models up to '77.

They are very well! The connection is that Grant's brother's kids go to the same school as mine. As we were talking about my new 911, your name came up. I told them your nickname on Pelican was fishcop and they mentioned their nickname for you - but I won't mention it here :)

Give me a shout when your 915 is up for sale. I may very well be interested.

Did you buy the one on ebay that needed a rebuild just recently?
