Battery or Regulator Failure

Today as I was prepping for Autocross I saw a bunch of white powder in my trunk near my 8 year old Interstate Conventional Lead/Acid Batteries. Typically this is from Acid fumes and I neutralize then recoat the affected areas with Extend and paint.

After my runs, I saw that the area near one of the batteries was damp. I sprayed some Windex (ammonia in Windex is a base) to neutralize the potential acid since I did not have any baking soda handy. When I got home, I pulled both batteries and they appeared do be dry. I wetted and neutralized the area some more and am waiting for it to dry.

When I was driving home, I noted that my voltage gauge was showing about 13-14 volts for the entire 25 minute trip while at normal RPMS and about 12.5 volts at idle.

I am planning on replacing my batteries with an Optima but should I be suspicious of the voltage regulator as well?

Ten years on the same batteries?? I would start there, and see if the problem is corrected.

My thoughts as well but perhaps the collected wisdom here knows something I did not.

DOH! I should have checked before posting. They have been in there for only about 8 years......

8 years is still a long time for a battery. You got a good deal on that battery.

Not a battery expert here, but it seems like once they go dry, they're not the same esp since yours is/was on it's last legs.

Get the optima and make yourself a mounting plate our of something you're comfortable cutting.

Have to give the PO credit for the long life battery. On my watch it never went dry (checked it 2x per year and added only distilled water)

Sadly, no easy cutting for me. In a Longnose, you stuff the battery sideways into one of the battery compartments.
