oil cooler scoop
How many people have one of these and do they work well? I'm speaking of the little scoop on the corner to cool the oil cooler. My oil temp was higher than I like today and I was thinking of getting one. Thanks

I have one that I made and it makes a difference in my water temperatures for my intercooler. (have an aftercooler mounted where stock oil cooler goes)
That being said if it made a difference for that Im sure the oil would run cooler.

Not really. You will need to pair it with a few other upgrades to have any effect at all. Do you have a carrera style cooler already?

seymore,
I bought one maybe eight years ago, and it's seen many modifications to get it to work better. To answer your question, no it does not work "well", but I need to explain. My '84 had the finned cooler, without a fan. I added the scoop, and found that it does not really flow any air. The scoop is a scoop in outside appearance only because the air sort of dies once it is "scooped". I added some internal baffles with a smooth sweep that forced air directly onto the cooler. It worked somewhat better, but the cooler itself is not boxed, so air hits the finned side and then flows around the cooler. The real improvement came when I added the factory fan. Now, when I run the AC I never really see oil temps above 210, whereas before I frequently saw oil temps climb over 240, which I feel is way too hot. I think another problem is that hot air is thin air, and when temps climb to 105F with the low humidity we have here, it takes much more air to carry away the heat. The scoop is not effective alone. I also pull up on the heater levers, run the rear blower air through the heat exchangers too. I end up cooking the center cv boots faster, and the front right tire gets a little bit cooked too, but that's ok. |

I have sold almost 2000 of these scoops and not one returned because "It didn't work", actually not one returned at all. I have had one on my 78 including the wood one that was a prototype for about 7 years now and wouldn't be without one. Buy one and if doesn't do anything send it back. I accept returns from all my distributers.

Jerry,
I really feel that you should add an internal baffle to make the scoop flow air to the cooler. To be honest, the air needs to be ducted directly from the scoop to the front surface of the cooler. As it is, you are sort of hoping that the air decides to flow through the cooler. I think the winning setup is to make the scoop feed air to the fan, and then the fan does the heavy work of forcing air through the cooler. If you want, I can take some macro shots of what I did to mine. Seymore, did you check this article out? http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_extra_cooling/911_extra_cooling.htm Last edited by rusnak; 06-12-2008 at 06:01 PM.. |

I have had one for several years, as you can see. What you may not be able to see is that I also hollowed out the fog lamp below and fitted a piece of plastic behind it to direct air up to the 28 row cooler. Between the scoop, the modded fog lamp, a slightly rich mix, and disconnecting my vacuum retard, I can keep my temps manageable. How much each contributes, though, I really can't tell you.

I've had one on my 1987 for a few years since I did my 3.4 - even running at sebring at 95 degrees I have not had cooling issues. I works to funnel cool air - especially with a carrera cooler

If your running at the track, another way to get the air to the oil cooler is to pull your headlight and swiss cheese the bucket. It's right in front of the oil cooler and with the headlight out, the bucket works like a scoop to funnel air to the oil cooler.

Donny,
After I removed the workings of the lamp, I drilled out the back of the housing. I then took some of the expanded metal aluminum screening that is placed over eavestroughs to prevent leaves from gathering and siliconed it into place. This material came in both black and clear anodized. I used the ca to more closely replicate the lense of the other foglamp, which I left intact. The plastic piece behind to try to direct the air is held in place by the same bolt that secures the lamp.

Very nice Paul. I didn't notice the left light was still intact. Excellent idea. Especially with that lamp upgraded to a driving light for those dark, lonely night roads...
Do I understand you siliconed the screen to the inside of the original fog lamp rim that would normally hold the lens on? What year fog lamps did you use. Are those the originals that came with your '77? Your quote: "Never leave well enough alone" or "Good enough" just isn't! Thanks, pal!

IMHO if you really want to solve the oil high temp issue you need to install a front valance oil cooler.
Few of us have tried all those gizmos/gaggets with marginal results... Save some time and money (engine wear) and go with the cooler - it is not that expensive anyway, looks good and WILL work. |

That's a stock Carrera (84-89) front valence and fogs.
