Anyone use a tow bar?????

I too am interested in this. If it's a pre-89 car it should be fairly simple to fabricate something that attaches to the front control arm mounting points.

You could probably buy some of those neat tow-hooks that mount to the suspension, and then cut up and modify & strengthen a good vw beetle tow bar to attach to them??

i would think that you could just grab the bar off of a carrera with a/c that protects the front condenser. it bolts right up to the front a arm mounts and you could even weld a hook to the front of it. don't know if it would suit your specific need tho.

That also seemed the logical choice to me...and yes, a simple VW tow bar is what I had in mind, just wonder about tranny issues...

I wouldn't worry about tranny issues, provided it's a manual shift. Just leave it in nuetral of course.

I think the biggest obstacle to overcome is not crushing the front valance w/ the bar.

I wouldn't tow w/ anything welded to the bar, they are not that strong. You shouldn't tie it down there, much less tow. Plus they only connect to one bolt per side...

I bought 2 extra t-bar protector/ tie down/ tow hook gizmos. I welded a pipe laterally on each, inserted a continuous solid pipe through both and through the ears of the triangulated bar. Washers and clevis pins finished the job. The valance must come off. Works the same on a 914.

I started with a generic tow bar from the RV place.

Mike..yep the valance will be problematic, I'd use one of those 'downdraft' receivers..

Milt...I'm with ya on that engineering....
