				"Repaired" Tach still off...

I just had my tach repaired & customized by North Hollywood Speedometer. It was reading lower than it was supposed to, tap the glass & it would move back up closer to where it was supposed to be, etc.

The tach is doing it again. I just reinstalled it the other day. Last night on the way home, I watch the tach slowly drop vs. constant speed in 5th on the highway. Tapped the glass, back up it went. At least it's going back to accurate reading when the glass is tapped... Ok, before I call North Hollywood Speedo about this... Is there another possible problem with the car that's on my end & not on the gauge's end? Thanks.

I suspect that if you can wake the unit up by tapping on the face glass, the problem is with the tach, not the car electronics. North Hollywood wil surely make good on the rebuild. Bill K

how about one of the spade terminals and the crimped wire?

has the tack been in/out more than a few times? I'm currently going through some behind-the-dash re-wireing on my 77, necessitated by some ham-fisted stereo 'technician' that the PO used to install a system. Bill K

I took a thin screwdriver & tweaked the terminals on the black connector block to ensure a decent connection. They looked good, no oxide, etc.

Been meaning to ask, what's the solitary spade terminal outside of the block-of-6 for? I also did the white LED bulbs from eBay while in there... except they sent 8 bulbs... So only the middle 3 gauges are updated. Looks pretty funky.

the single spade you're referring to might be the parking light indicator, not sure.

you also have to wiggle the wires past the terminal crimp and try to detect corrosion, broken strands, general looseness. Bill K

8's all you need if you only put the LEDS in the back-light sockets. Leave incandescents in the indicator sockets (They are colored anyway - you can't really tell a differenc.) 2 Bulbs for each of the three larger gauges - 1 bulb each for far left and right.

Ok, the terminals in the black connector are EXCELLENT, no oxidation at all. Reconnected everything, back to not working often / off when it does.

Called NHS, they said if I wanted to send it back, they'd re-test, but that 80% of the time it's a voltage regulator causing the issue, & the other 40% of the time a bad DME box. Any other input? I replaced the alternator a couple of years ago with a new factory one. DME box hasn't been opened up in years, relay changed a couple of years ago, no running issues with the car.
