topend rebuilt?

what estimate mileage would a 911 3.2 need a topend?

Unless you are having issues with your valve guides there is no limit. There are people on this forum with 250, 000+ miles on their original engines.

topend

My 85 911 have 158000 and runs strong, took it to a PC mechanic today because I heard a slight tapping in the valve covers, he adjusted the valves and oil change. drove it home the noise is still there. that why I asked the question on topend milage.

Just had that done on my '89 at 98k miles.

125K is average, but i've done it at 60K. depends on oil consumption/smoking. the 60K one had crusty oil buildup on the sparkplugs. some keep on truckin' for quite a while.

My 85 has 125,000 miles. It only burns 1 quart in 1,500 miles. I will be testing that again in two weeks as I head to Charlotte NC for Porsche Parade. The car will have over 129,000 miles by the time I get back home.

The real test for when you need a top end is oil compsumption. If it gets down to 600 miles per quart it is time for a top end.

Mine get about 1800 miles before one quart with 158000 mile, I only seen startup smoke twice since I had it over one year.

This is not really a "mileage" issue, per se. Symptoms determine whether or not a top end, or any other work for that matter, is needed. As JW points out, 125k may be average but that's no reason to send a car with 125k off the the shop to have it done, or conversely, to simply wait till you hit 125k to to do the work. Your post begs the question...is your car showing signs of needing work or are you just trying to get a feel for when this might be needed? My car started showing signs around 110k which, not surprisingly, backs up JW's comments, but I held off till 160k to do the work. SEVERAL P mechanics said odds were very much in my favor that if I kept the oil level from getting low, I could drive it a long time with the problem.

John my 85 911 have 158000, but don't use oil maybe a quart in 1700 miles and don't smoke at all.

I recently finished the top-end on my '88. It documents milage, condition, costs, and more. Peruse and enjoy...
