oil lines leaking at crimps

The oil lines from the thermostat to the oil tank and crossover pipe are weeping at the crimps on the flexible hose.

I was thinking of taking the lines to a local hydraulic hose shop and having new flexible sections crimped on.

Is this a good idea, or should I just buy new lines. What should I look out for.

TIA

You can definitely get new hose with new crimps installed by a hydralic shop.
I just did this with my car. I did have some problems finding a shop to do it though. Just be sure to tell them that you can reuse the current fittings. I didn't know this at first and a couple of shops turned me down because they didn't have the right fittings on hand.

You can also cut the crimps off and clamp on 7/8ID oil line from aircraftspruce.com, or -16AN braided line (more widely available), with a few common hose clamps. Works just fine on my car - these are low pressure lines. Got the idea from jonbot and Tim Hancock.

Interesting - I hadn't seen Chuck's replies. Inspections I can't comment on.

But, I wonder, from an engineering perspective, what a crimp does that a clamp does not? Certainly, crimps would be faster, cheaper, and more consistent for automated mass production. Also, crimps provide a means of holding the hose on the outside as well as the inside - clamps would only serve to hold the inside of the hose to its nipple. This would seem to matter most on high pressure hoses. Am I missing something else?

That said, I have had a crimped oil line blow apart on my driver ... not fun at all, though it reinforces the fact that you can indeed drive an engine without oil for a few minutes without doing damage (other than a horrendous mess).

I've had hoses rebuilt using the same ends and new crimps.
