Zenith Fuel Pump
Hey Gents-
Is there a way to not use the expen$ive fuel pump for a '70 with zenith carbs? I turned the key on and smell fuel so I looked underneath and found I was leaking some of that good $4.75 per gallon shizzle. I didnt have a chance to take the cover off but I will assume the worst until tomorrow afternoon. I hope its the fuel line. If its the fuel pump should I consider webers? Thanks, Capt. Crunch

It's been a long time, but when I had a 70T the pump had to be replaced & the mechanic replaced it with some generic unit from an auto parts store. Cost about 30.00 I think. That was back in '80 or so, but still... Just need one that delivers approx. the correct amount of fuel (which I don't remember offhand). Back then the pumps weren't as hi pressure as they are now for the FI systems. Car ran the same as before so with a little research you should be able to find one that works for cheap money. Hopefully others can be more specific on necessary fuel rates.

Go hear to read about the Carter recommendation...it goes for about $90. http://www.racetep.com/webfuelspark.html#webfuel or you can go to Pegasus Racing and they list a Bendix there that is reasonable. Hasd nothing to do with or wothout Webers, both type of carb run off trhe same type of pump. I also used one of those small square type pumps for a number of years with no complaints.. FWIW

If you didn't smell fuel until you turned the pump on, I would think that implies the pump is moving the fuel and you have a leak in the fuel line. If the fuel lines are original, that would not be surprising. The cloth braided lines can appear to be ok, but the rubber can actually be leaking. If you squeeze the fuel hose between your fingers and they are leaking, your fingers will be wet and smell like gasoline. A common problem is for the fuel vapor lines in the trunk to shrink and pull away from the connectors. It is worth checking them. If your pump is bad, make sure you get a high volume, low pressure pump that operates at 3.5 - 5 PSI. Generic universal pumps work, but don't have the flow bypass line back to the tank that the original pump has.
