Knowing Dave I would have to agree with this statement, but what would I know about rare parts

Fact is, they aren't making them anymore, plus a very limited number of cars built, for the guy who has a car that was modded, and wants it brought back to stock, that is a deal.

I would have to say that anyone who lets things like this go to MS Road & Race should be pummeled too.
Just because you can do something isn't a reason you should do something.

Maybe an angry mob will take them down at a swapmeet someday...

It's funny how we live in the world's foremost, free-market economy and people get all worked up about this.

If you think the price is too high, don't buy it. Or, make him an offer. Hey, maybe we should blame Porsche for not having the foresight to make a bunch of these...

Ya, and while we are at it lets march down to Exxon/Mobil and take them down!!!
I know Dave too and for the rare parts he is the guy to go to and we know none of these parts are cheap. I have never felt like I've been screwed over by him, he has always given me fair pricing and great advice on my car.
He is trying to earn a living to support his family and his passion for these cars just like we all are, he is a small mom and pop shop trying to make a living, so if you don't like his pricing don't buy from him.
It is like complaining about the radio but never changing the station!!!

I get pissy when I see him go around a swapmeet and pickup every one of a specific item so they won't compete against his items at twice the price. A swapmeet is for enthusiasts.

I reserve the right to object to being an obvious vulture.

To be clear, I'm not complaining about the price. I'm astounded by it.

My comments were directed at those who choose to personally blast people for making a living by selling rare parts at high prices. The fact is that there are so many rich people in the world competing for a finite number of rare things that prices for some of these things tend to astound those of us still making mortgage payments. It's simple supply and demand, not restricted to this seller, this make of car, or even cars in general.

Porsche made less than 2 dozen SC/RS cars, almost 25 years ago. Frankly, I'm surprised there are any spare parts floating around at all, for these cars.

No doubt it's rare, and therefore expensive. It's hard for me to comprehend spending the equivalent of a nice mid 80's Carrera on one part.

Yes and no. I still have probs comprehending these prices - and I think I would even if I struck it rich tomorrow and wouldn't have to pay my mortgage anymore. If this were a 130 or 450 year old part - ok, no probs.

Fact is, the guys that made it are prob still hanging around the Kugelfischer factory smoking butts on their breaks. And they prob still have all the tooling in place to make more. They just need a guy from upstairs to come down from upstairs and say "hey! make one of these!". And 2 of them could go off for 3 months making one injection pump and Kugelfischer would still make a substantial profit.

Naw, all this originality stuff does nothing for me. Don't get me wrong - I am a capitalist swine, and if I had one of these laying around and some schmuck offered me $250k for it, I'd take it - no questions asked. I'm just trying to say I don't understand the schmucks. Never have gotten off on the original-air-in-the-tires-thing. But hey - as I've said before - whatever wiggles your willy. (as is graphically depicted in Mark's avatar )

Here's what the pump is - it's a Boutique Item. It's a product whose sole intention is to drive people to the Road & Race Ebay Store as well as the regular business. It's the kind of thing that when you see it is supposed to make you think, "Oh. Wow. If he has this rare piece of equipment he's bound to have the parts I need." It's kinda like a bright flashing light ... or a scantily clad woman stradling the hood of a car. The concept isn't new and it still works like a charm.

It's marketing. And, it's good marketing. I mean look at all the attention he's getting here on Pelican. So what if some of it is bad press ... someone once said that bad press is better than no press. Or was it that any press is good press? Whatever the cliche is doesn't matter. The reality is that he's got the parts you need when you need 'em ... the price may be a subject of discussion (or discontent) but such is the way of our world.

As said above: Dave's a good guy. If you don't like the price, don't buy the part.

Oh, and FWIW, that pump's been up there for close to a year now. I'm surprised it took this long for someone to post the link.

I couldn't come close to making this point more succinctly well done Javadog.
