Talking Interchangablility of Fuel Pumps

I'm replacing my fuel pump. Having browsed our host, other online sources, and Advanced Auto stores I have discovered lots of interesting options. The OEM direct replacement is very $. Yet, Bosch (maker of OEM pump) also offers a 'Universal' replacement for the OEM pump... There is also an option to use a different manufacturer for an 'exact' replacement.

Now I'm thinking, and my head is hurting because of it, that Bosch would not offer a 'Universal' pump that would not have enough flow/pressure to replace the orriginal OEM pump. It is an assumption I feel ok in making, but thought I'd see what the forum thought on this??

Monetrily, its Bosch OEM, Alternate Brand, Bosch Universal with the Universal being less than HALF the cost of the Bosch OEM replacement... Interesting... So I bought the 'Universal'. It looks, from online pics, exactly like the OEM pump, but has a different part number.

Comments?

Just make sure it has either an internal, or external, check valve.
And, depending on condition, you may need a new rubber sleeve for mounting.
Replace the short 1/2" hose from tank to pump and use new clamps.

fuel pump

Greetings,

I'm very interested in the final results that you come up with as I'm looking at replacement fuel pump as well and I saw the same ad and had the same questions, so please keep us informed.

It is greatly appreciated.

Gunter,

Yeah I replaced that short hose a few years ago... gas... leaks... smells... hot exhausts... um... boom... I'll check the rubber mount again. It used to vibrate against the AL cross bar so I have some extra rubber in there.. Had not considered the check valve. May have to get one of those just in case. Pictures looked like it had one on the end, but I could easily be wrong.

I'll keep you all informed. I'm sure it will pump enough for starting the car, but the real test will be on track at full blast. I still don't think Bosch would let a pump be called a universal replacement for another of their pumps unless it meets or exceeds the spec of the replaced pump, but stranger things have happened...

Best regards,

Michael

The specs for the pump will tell you if it has an internal check valve.
Either with or without, the connection for the banjo fitting on the pump usually needs to be M12 x 1.5 mm for the cap nut.
The specs for the pump also tell you about rating; it should be around 6 bars to meet system pressure requirements.

Excelent info, Gunter! When I get the pump I'll post the part # and specs. With luck it should meet or exceed specs.

Best regards,

Michael

Here are the specs for the pump:

Bosch 0 580 254 909 Inline Fuel Pump

Bosch 909 fuel pumps mount inline (out side of your gas tank), most commonly rear center under your car or truck. Each Bosch 909 fuel pump provides 148LPH of flow and operate at 72.5PSI.
Bosch 909 Fuel Pump Specs:
Bosch Part Number: 0 580 254 909
Minimum Current: 12 Volts /
13 Amp
Operating Pressure: 72.5 PSI (5 Bar)
Minimum Flow @ Outlet: 39 GPH (148 LPH)
Fuel Pump Location: In-Line

Fuel Pump Connections:
Inlet: 12MM
Outlet: M12 x 1.5

Electrical: Positive M5 / Negative M4

from:
http://boschfuelpumps.com/

Now, looks like 72.5 PSI = 4.999 BAR at 0 FT Above Sea Level so that is obviously not 6 bar!

5 bar sounds like it might just make it?
Does it have the internal check valve? Or?

I believe the part screwed into the delivery side with the spring in it is the check valve. My OEM one has the same addition on it. I guess I'll put it in and check my pressures to see if they are in a workable range. My only concern would be at wide open throttle. That is hard to measure.
