Where to place jack......

2 questions.............

First is........Where are you supposed to place a large floor jack under a 911 to remove front tires? What about rear tires?

Secondly.......Where do the feet/pads of a regular 4 point lift in a tire shop get set at?

First off you need a "jacking pad" from our host: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_TOLtol_pg1.htm#item4

Next you might review a thread on this subject:

Sorry to poach, but can you jack the front up on earlier cars using the tow hook area?

Welcome to the Pelican BBS. This is probablly the best place on earth to get lots of information on the care/feeding/driving of your 911. It is customary here for you to post a picture of your ride so we can ohh and ahh.

As you may guess, this topic has come up numerous times and us old timers generally respond with a suggestion to use the search function here to find the information.

So.... Use the search function with the key words jacking points.

If you do, the third or fourth thread (All the jacking points??) will have all your answers. There are other posts listed as well that can provide yet more answers about correct lifting and supporting of your 911.

Check my post above for safe jacking/support points. there are those that use the front crossmember with a 2x4 but I personally like to jack each side and use jack stands.

I may take some hits on the but:

For the rear, I put a short 2/6 on a floor jack with the grain running side to side and slip it under the motor case at the lowest point. Make sure you do not put it under anything like the oil lines or heat exchangers.

For the front I take a pice of 2x4 I cut down to basically a 2.3 that is a bit over a foot long. I put in under the pice between the A/C condenser and the gas tank.

When ever possible I use the factory side jack points w a proper jack pad attachment.

If I raise the rear, I put jack stands under the torsion tube and allow spacing for the car to move forward when I let the floor jack down.

You don't say what car you have but...
On my 88 I use

The engine case seam in the rear, jack stands on the torsion bar covers.

A 2x4 on the cast aluminum cross member in the front, jack stands under the suspension arm pivot points.

There are 4 pads welded on the body for your trips to the tire store.

To be safe, most of us use a good quality floor jack when working on our cars. To allow the floor jack to lift the car, you place the jack pad into this square reciever and then use your jack under the big end of the pad to lift the car.

OK, so if I don't have that Pelican Pad at the moment, I can use a 4x4 with a groove cut into it and place it in the cup of my floor jack, right?

I have a 7 ton and a 15 ton floor jack, commercial grades, so they have huge cups.

To lift the back, jack at or just inboard of the stock lift point, place the stand u under the t bar tube near the outer end. Do the same on the other side.

Repeat to the necessary height

Here is the car on 4 stands using a similar procedure

my 3.2 is really low, so I can't use the cross member without driving the front wheels up onto some 2x4s first. So, now I use two floor jacks to lift the car at the A-arm mounting point. I don't use the a-arm itself as the lifting point. I use the a-arm cover. When you use two jacks simultaneously, you distribute the lifting force between two points, and I feel put less stress on the car body.

I stopped jacking up the car with the side to side method, as I feel this is way too dangerous to be doing on a routine basis.

For the front lift like this using 2x4.

Then place jack stands on two X on C line

This should do into the Pelican Wiki as the question has been asked 15,000 times.
