Master Cylinder install???

I'm preparing to install a new Master Cylinder (old one is out) in my '72 911 and am guessing that fitting the reservoir feed lines into the new Master Cylinder will be the biggest obstacle. I reviewed previous threads on this and to summarize the highlights:

- Disconnect the feed lines at the reservoir and drop them down a few inches for easier access.

- Use only brake piston silicon grease as a lubricant to help.

My question(s) is: Should the grommets be left in the Master Cylinder, then apply some grease to the lines and plug them in? Or remove the grommets from the Master Cylinder, put them on the lines then lubricate the grommets and plug them in?

Any other hints?

Thanks!

hahaha. those lines are a beotch!!! i have tried it both ways several times. i think leaving the grommets in place, and jabbing the lines into them is the way to go. i used some dow silicon which may not have been the right thing to do. just a thin smear of it. in my opinion, it was what made the difference between me high fiving myself, and drinking a beer OR me beating the schit out of the car with a ball peen hammer, punting the master cylinder into the weeds, and cussing. the kicker is that you will second guess yourself repeatedly. "is it all the way in?"

good luck. breath in blue, breath out pink... (it aint that bad. heheheh. 7 out of 10)

I was not able to put the complete grommet and tube in at once. Had to jam the tube into the grommet which was already installed in the master. Be careful with the tubes, they are pricey to replace. You'll get it.

I third the suggestion, keep the grommets in the master, and try your best to pop the lines in..

one thing that may help is to mark the lines at the point where you think they will be fully seated, then during the pull/prod/swearing you will be doing, you can look up to see how far you have managed to get the lines into the grommets/mc inlet.

Angry Master of the Master Cylinder

I just did this yesterday to my '71.

After cussing and having grown man hissy fits, this is what I did:
Remove the lines from the reservoir, then feed them out the bottom of the car (you may have already done this)
Put the master cylinder and lines on the work bench, put a little lube in the the nipples, and start pushing hard, turning, twisting and yelling "b**ch". They will slide in eventually.

My car was a very big pain in the ass. Most of the nuts were corroded, so I stripped a few, meaning that I had to remove the line from the other end and take the lines out with the master cylinder. It took me about 5-6 hours over 2 days just to remove it.... I hope Yours was easier.
Today I test it out.

Good luck!
Brent
