Installing cone filter on 3.2
I bought a K&N cone filter to replace the standard airbox on my 3.2 Carrera (I don't need to get into a debate on advantages/disadvantages of doing so). When I pulled the filter out of the stock airbox to look at how to take it off, I find a small hole in the back of the box (actually toward the front of the car) about one cm in diameter with a hose coming in. There is no place on the new K&N kit for any such hose. What is that hose and what do I do with it if I remove the stock airbox?
In addition, does anyone have step-by-step instructions or tips for the conversion (no instructions the with kit and it is not in Wayne's book or the Bentley manual) |
Hi. I did this to my 3.2 Carrera. FYI, I did not like the "cold air intake" sound of the setup, so I switched it back to the stock airbox with a K&N filter in it after about six months. Some people really dig that sound, but to me it sounded a bit like a teenager's Civic when I released the throttle. Pshhhhh. Anyway, I believe that hose in the back of the box is just an oil breather hose. I think I just left mine disconnected. Can't remember... The conversion is simple. Just remove the four bolts holding the intake side of the box. There is also one (maybe two?) bolt through the bottom of the box toward the rear of the car too. Once you have the box out, use the same four bolts to bolt the adaptor to the intake. Put the bolt that went through the bottom of the box back into the intake so you don't lose it in case you want to go back to stock. Don't forget the gasket between the adaptor and the intake. Slip the cone filter over the adaptor and use a large hose clamp to hold the new cone filter on. Do not forget to oil the filter! I may have mssed some steps, but once you start working on it, it will become very intuitive. Have fun!

The hose going into the stock air box is connected to the cylinder in the top of the passenger side rear wheel well. This cylinder is the charcoal cannister for the fuel emissions system. If you leave it disconnected, you're not going to harm a thing.
