I think I'll keep my SC

I test drove a 2002 Boxster S yesterday and it left me wanting more. It's freakish fast compared to my '79 SC targa and stable as hell but it was just missing something. The A/C was great, the radio was great, the engine noise was great, the seats were great and I took the curves faster in it than I do in my SC and the sales man didn't mind. I'd have to sell my SC and come up with $8k or more to buy the Boxster S, which I think is reasonable for a modern Porsche but I have a feeling I'll miss my SC too much.

The Boxster is just too civilized plus I'd have to drive way faster to get the same seat of the pants excitement that I get every time I take my SC out on the road. On the track is where I can try to exploit the limits of the Boxster but with the price of gas and precious family time, I'm afraid my track days are over before they really even got started. So, I think I'll keep my SC and my $8k. Hey, maybe I'll use some of that money for an A/C upgrade!

Not a bad choice.

Sounds like a wise plan, especially the A/C upgrade! The Boxster is a great car, I used to drive a 968, it was a great car too, but neither one is quite the same as a 911.

Just about every car I've ever bought, I've regretted selling but the pcar is the one that will stay for the duration. I've had newer, faster cars, and always end up back at the pcar. Some folks (my wife) would call it an addiction, to me it's like a mistress. At least it's one she is willing to compete with and most likely cheaper and lower maintenance.

Ditto for me. I regret selling most of my older cars. I also toyed with the idea of getting a Boxster S as they are relatively good buys right now. I did not go as far test driving one - just talking to people. The most common comment from experienced PCA members (high ranking members) was that the Boxster is essentially an entry model Porsche regardless of the configuration and the 911 was a top of the line model regardless of year. So I decided to keep the 89 911 cab and did not go further on the inquiry. No regrets so far. 911 is not the fastest car but the experience is so satisfying.

Easy to drive

The SOUL of the car has been removed. Not to say I would not want a Boxster...loved driving my fathers through the Cascades of Oregon going to Bend. Great car, loved it, wife wants one.

Drove one on the AX course and was over 1 seconds faster (this was the TTOD car), took away the driver for me.

Now (we) are in a 1971 RS Clone and kicking the Boxster ass by more than a second. All driver(s) and I can hold my head up high on that one!

Not sure about the "S" but I was racing a Boxster on an on-ramp to the 10 freeway and it was no competition. I creamed the Boxter. My 911 has the SW chip.

You probably raced a base Boxster, which your car is definitely faster than. However, an "S" would've pulled your car, even with the SW chip.

I agree with the older 911 being the most involving. Of the three Porsches I own, the '84 Carrera, the 2000 Carrera, and my wife's Cayman, the old 911 is the most visceral and fun on a base level - not that the other two aren't fun too, btw.

You are wise to keep the 911. My wife has her 97boxster, and yes it is fun, newer, with all the comforts the older cars don't have, but they just dont have the seat of the pants feel. I like the wifes car, but would never even think of ditching the SC for one..............not even an S

Porsche-O-Phile 06-25-2008 01:49 AM

Keep the 911.

Newer cars are too appliance-like for me. Older cars have SOUL.

Take a boxster s to the track and you'd be giddy. They are more than competent cars -

4flyboy 06-25-2008 08:32 AM

Girl car...........................

Consider the source: someone who has never driven or even ridden in a boxster also sexist biased and opinionated. Truth is I love my Carrera I'm afraid I might really like it.

Kemo 06-25-2008 10:43 AM

I went to a DE last year with my SC and there were a couple of Boxters tearing up the track! I hear the Spec Boxter racers are quite a handfull too...

That said, I prefer the older 911 myself. Good choice!

Great thread for someone like me, lacking the money to buy a newer Porsche! :)

Embraer 06-25-2008 05:18 PM

I wave at every Porsche I see on the road. The only owners that rarely wave back are Boxster owners. hmmmmm......

Your 85' is worth more than a used Boxter! (I think)
