008 Distributor not advancing...what to do?

This afternoon marked my weekly block of time set aside for messing around with the 911.

Previous episodes found me replacing pretty much the entire ignition system...everything but the distributor itself, that is. Armed with a nice digital timing light w/ built in tach borrowed from a friend, I set out to cover the 'setting the timing' chapter of the 101 projects book.

My father swung by to check up on this nonsense, and quickly pointed out that the timing was not changing at all. Since it is the correct 008 T spec distributor, it's all mechanical with no vac advance.

We pulled it, removed pertronix and the mounting plate, removed the fixed top plate, and had a look see underneath at the springs and weights. I can't tell if something is wrong there, so I sprayed some liquid wrench and the previously not-moving plate started to move. Great, I thought, and re-assembled for a test run.

Still no advance. What is the best course of action here? Obviously it's the springs and weights responsible for the advance that are messed up somehow. Can a complete idiot rebuild their own distributor or is it advisable that only a shop tackle this?

The shaft assy. that supports the rotor as well as the mounting plate that supports the Pertronix (or contact points) is a single piece, separate from the main distributor shaft. The upper shaft rotates independently from the bottom shaft, it's range of movement restricted by a mechanical stop, the dist. advance springs and centrifugal weights.

Sounds like the top shaft isn't free to rotate freely. Remove the rotor and you should see a fiber pad inside the hollow shaft. That pad covers and lubricates the contact surfaces between the two shafts. Add some oil there and work the upper shaft back and forth. If it's seized from a lack of lube, you may have to diassemble, inspect and lube if okay.

Well...it looks like at least one of the springs has been replaced with something from a hardware store - you can tell that the end was crimped by pliers or vice grips...jeez.

No wonder the damn thing won't move. It was clearly not overhauled correctly. So the question is: where can I find the correct springs????
