Steering rack removal

This is actually a question about my '66 912. I just always get better info on this board.
I am going to be replacing the the pedal area of the floor and will need to remove the steering rack. I want to avoid disassembling the whole steering assembly, what is the easiest method for removal? how much of the front suspension needs to come out with it? Thanks guys, I sure appreciate all of the info I have received in the past.

Your best bet would be to take it apart from the coupler under the hood, near the edge of the smugglers box. That being done, due to the length of the shaft, it is easier to remove the crossmember and drop it straight down. I have seen people use a pry bar and manhandle the gear to get past the CM. Otherwise just dropping the 4 bolts that hold the CM in place, and the 6 bolts in front and leave the struts connected. That should give you plenty of room to get it out.
