68 Engine #3080408 ; Alum. or Mag. case ?
Someone is offering me this engine ; my red book give me a 901/06 engine from a 911, August 67 to July 68 ; just from photos it's hard to tell ; Is there a way to know if this is a aluminium case or a magnesium case ??
Thanks, Regards JD

That is an A-programme model engine with aluminun crankcase halves. (Source: Original Porsche 911, Peter Morgan) The B-programme engines were made of magnesium to save 22lbs of weight. The B's started with engine # 6190001.

My data suggests that the first MG 901/06 case is 3080372, thus 3080408 would also be MG.
Can you verify the type # 901/16 and get the build # stamped beside the type # please.
