Oil Line vs. Exhaust

Subject Line: Exhaust Manifold/Oil Line Interference

All – I’ve installing the rebuild engine in my 1978 911 SC Targa, and have run into a conundrum.

I’ve installed a GHL Exhaust System and what I think is the oil return line (from cooler on passenger side) is resting on the right hand manifold.

I’m thinking, in the interest of good oil management (keep the temperature down, and the oil in the line) that oil line/ manifold interference is a bad idea.

I’m also pretty sure I’m not the first guy to run into this problem, but a cursory search resulted in zero hits on this board.

I’m throwing myself upon the mercy of the collective consciousness, and promise any and all suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks

I have a B&B exhaust system on my 83 SC, and you are right there is close proximity to the oil lines and the exhaust system. My headers are wrapped with heat retardent wrap kept on with stainless steel ties and the oil rerturn line is wrapped with an insulated stainless steel wrap - also using the stainless steel ties. I probably have some pictures I can download later. The PO had this done professionally - not sure of the brand of material, etc..

The stock system has the two heat exchangers dumping into a crossover pipe and into a "one in" muffler. Any time you run a "two in" exhaust, you need to retrofit the oil lines from the 1974 car. Our host sells them. There are two lines that need to be purchased. If you look under the SSI header system here on PP parts page, it tells you what oil lines you need and the part numbers.

I found some pics of my exhaust set-up - 2 in 2 out B&B's with the heat wrap on the headers and insulation on the oil line. I have an updated Carerra cooler up front with a fan as well - helps with 95 temps in Wash DC. Temps always stay very close to the 1st bottom line

Correct oil lines........

These are the oil lines you need to keep the oil line away from the heat.

The path of the curved factory oil line under the engine is also very close to the factory heat exchangers. I think it's a good idea to install some insulation here as well. Same with the flex oil tank hose next to the passenger side HE (wrapped in photo). A lot of heat pours out of the HEs during normal operation.
