flywheel: reface or not

I am installing a new clutch and I am not sure what to do with the flywheel, if anything.

It has no obvious scoring but it has most likely done 200K miles.

So do I have it machined, just clean it and reassemble, or something else?

See:

When to resurface a flywheel??

and this post on early flywheels:

Flywheel Specifications

You may wish to take a copy of the spec, like John, to a machinist so they know what to do if they don't know Porsches.

Best regards,

Michael

The inside corner, at the edge of the 'business' surface, needs to be cut SQUARE. Not rounded. This requires a special grinding stone. If you can find someone with the special grinding stone that can cut this internal corner squarely, then it can be done.

These flywheels are pretty thin to begin with, according to my eye. Unless a proper, balanced, in-spec job can be done inexpensively, my temptation would be to either use a new one (yeah, I know they are spendy), or just 'rough up' the existing one and re-use.

I'd replace it. The odds of getting clutch chatter, if you have it machined, are high. Finding someone that can machine (grind) it perfectly is difficult and you may have some hot spots that are deeper than the depth that will be removed when it gets machined. I've had problems 100% of the time when I didn't use a new flywheel. In some cases, the flywheel was machined, in others it looked (and measured) fine and was just cleaned.

I'll never reuse another old one.

I would like to just get a new flywheel, but this project is already way out of control!! I am already up for trans, clutch and axles!!

Do you mean wire brush, 600 grit or some such?
