This one's for Pop
I'm new here and not sure where this should go, mods feel free to move if proper.
The year was 1975, and my older brother and I were waiting at our grand parents for our folks to return from Louisville with a "new" car. I had no idea what it was supposed to be, but can still remember the moment I saw what they bought come up the driveway for the first time. A silver beauty like I had never seen. A non-descript 1972 T maybe, but it was, and is magic to me. Our dad bought it over mom's prefered Mercedes, and they never seemed to get along. If the points puked, it was with mom driving. Horn relay get stuck on? Mom driving. But Pop loved it, and kept it around all those years, many spent sitting idly in the garage, unfortunately. In between, we had a lot of great times riding, as we kids were small enough to fit in the back seats. I was seven when it entereded the family, and practiced pulling it in and out of the garage until I was 16 and mom talked Pop into letting me have it as my driver, until I wrecked it. My brother and I got it running when Pop got sick in the 1990's, and were able to take him for a few spins before he passed, July 3, 1997. He took me to Road America, Mid-Ohio, Indianapolis, Detroit for F-1, Road Atlanta, and Daytona, where I will be tonight for the Paul Revere, toasting one to his memory. When we could talk about little else, ther was always the Porsche and racing. Today, my own kids play and ride in the car and ask when they will get their turn at the wheel. I can't wait for the third generation to get behind the wheel. Thanks, Papa, for turning me onto a great car. And everything else. ![]() |

There is nothing better than the smiles on my boys faces when we are out for a drive.
And the sound of a 3 year old pronouncing PORSCHE perfectly as we pass others on the road. It's just not a car. It's a binding force that the lucky few experience. Good job 72T.

Great story.
My 5 year old has been asking more and more if we can take the "hot rod" for a drive. I hope my kids remember these days as fondly as you and your family did/does.

my two girls have been riding in 911's since they were little. now 13 and 10. ( and getting a little tight in the back seat, especially the 13 year old who's all knees and elbows) I've promised the '66 to the younger ( who loves the recaro buckets) and the '80 to the older ( who loves the a/c). I still get a kick out of pulling up for ice-cream, and after my wife and I climb out, two kids erupt from the back seats. surprises a lot of people who didn't know they HAD back seats.

Awesome memories with a legendary car. Both my 4 and 2 year old recognize the sound of the 911 as it fires up and when I drive her down the street. Both love cruising in it and I will remember all the times when we're out riding in it...even if they do fall asleep once in a while.
![]() I also love how both my kids correct the Porsche pronunciation. "Building tomorrow's Porsche lovers one memory at a time."
