Can't get into first smoothly
 

The G-50 tranny seems mushy to me. I need a lot of practice with my 911. I keep stalling; its really embarrassing. I get a better feel with a stiff clutch. With the Porsche it feels too soft and the shifter is clunky. Why put reverse up on within first gear? Don't know sometimes when I'm going to shift in 1st or 3rd; I have to look. I've driven a Ferrari 308 and it may seem slow to shift but its so easy to drive compared to my 911. The 911 is making me nervous.

The G50 has a hydraulic clutch, which is 'softer' than the mechanical of the 915.

Sounds like you might benfit from adjusting or replacing the shift linkage. Inexpensive.

Yeah, something definitely isn't right with your G50 if you're having problems with it. Mine had a new clutch and slave cylinder put in a while back (prior to my purchase) and compared to the last two 915 cars I have owned the G50 shift action is much nicer IMO.

Might be time for a tranny fluid change and bleeding of the slave.

I disagree that a G50 clutch is softer or lighter than a 915. A 915 that is equipped with the horseshoe helper spring, is properly adjusted and has properly operating components (throwout bearing, clutch cable, clutch housing, pilot bearing, good release fork) actually has a lighter operation than an early 87-89 G50.

The shift action on a G50 can be clunky if you're trying to select gears before the clutch is disengaged. This is easy to do if you're a fast shifter. You have to make sure you've got the pedal going in before moving the shift lever, or you'll get a sharp clunking feel from the shifter. It's also tough to be smooth if you're not used to the high release point on the clutch pedal. You'll get used to it.

The left-of-first reverse gear location is actually quite common on other makes of cars too. Though I agree that it's location is less desirable than below 5th. If you rush to put the G50 into first, sometimes you can pull too far to the left and grab the reverse gate. I've done this once or twice when hurrying to put the car in 1st, after daydreaming at a stoplight. People get a bit concerned when the traffic light goes green and the car in front of them has it's reverse lights come on! :D
