Stuck in Georgia need help Pelicans
Hello all,
Well it has been awhile since my last post.....I guess that happens when your girl is running good. Recently had the motor redone at Steinels Autowerks....she has ran like a champ, however my shift linkage seems to be out of adjustment. I am not able to "find" 3rd and fifth gear. Are there any pelicans that can refer me to a shop????? I am in Acworth Georgia 20 minutes north of Marietta.. Any suggestions will be helpful..... I will post picks of car when I get home. The motor is beautiful you could eat of the top or the bottom... So I need to find somewhere that can make adjustment. I am afraid to tinker with it myself. Hope to hear back soon. sitting in hotel trying to figure out next move..... Steve

This is an easy fix. You just need an allen wrench (5mm IIRC)and a Phillips screw driver.
Remove the tunnel cover at the rear using the Phillips screw driver. Loosen the shift coupler. Before you do that: Because you're already having problems getting into 3 and 5, put the car in any gear you can, then loosen the coupler. Put the shifter in the gear that the tranny is in, then tighten the coupler. Try to row into the other gears. If that works, you now justs need to fine tune the adjustment so that all gears engage well w/o grinding. I like to begin the adjustment with the shifter when in 3rd or 4th as it better centers the shifter and shift fork. So once you are able to get into 3rd and 5th, try this. It is usally one shot deal for me when I start in 3rd and 5th. Good luck. |

Allan key? You are thinking of something different. He needs a box-end wrench to adjust the coupler. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_shifting_improvements/911_shifting_improvements.htm gliderguy: You can do this. Follow the factory shifter adjustment procedure. It is as follows: a) Take off the cover between the rear seats, which exposes the shift coupler. Pull up the shifter boot, particularly so you can see the lower part of the shifter lever where it bends from "angled back" to more vertical. b) Loosen the retaining bolt, which pinches the shift rod on to the spline on the shift coupler. Let it be very loose. c) WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL, rotate the shift coupler clockwise when viewed towards the front of the car. You should be able to feel the coupler rub against the various shift stops as you rotate it back and forth. Rotate it to the furthest clockwise position, as seen when you are facing forward. Don’t pretend you are Tarzan and turn it with huge force....lightly is all that is necessary.. d) Keep your hand on it and hold it there. Don’t let it wiggle, if it does, turn it back to the furthest clockwise position. e) Move the shift lever so that the more vertical part of the lever is vertical (ie 90 degrees to the level...sticking straight up so to speak). Move it so that it lightly touches the side of the shifter housing which is on the 1st/2nd gear side.....closest to the driver. Again, gently. f) They should now be properly aligned.....lever closest to the driver with bottom part vertical, coupler clockwise in the neutral plane. g) Carefully tighten the pinch bolt. Make sure it is quite tight. h) Check things out. You must be able to engage reverse clash free (give the gear a little bit of time to stop after you stomp on the clutch), shifting should get to all the gears easily when driving.....things don’t work as smoothly when stopped and lastly, there must be a little bit of rotational play when 5th gear is selected. This is checked by shifting into 5th, and feeling whether you can wiggle the shift coupler with your hand. It should just click back and forth slightly...not much, but clearly discernable play.

Shop in Norcross
Jack Lewis Enterprises is a great shop in Norcross, 60 RAKESTRAW ST
NORCROSS, GA, 770-849-0302. I've known Jack for many years, and he works on street cars, vintage racers and modern racing 911s. You're likely to see early 356s, 911s, 914s, maybe a racing 996 all in the shop. DrChet |

THANKS to all that replied......With time not being on my side, I looked on the local PCA website and started calling numbers....After speaking with, two extremely helpful gentlemen, a garage was found. Conclusion....Needed new shift coupler assembly, plastic bushings were shot...... Cary at Premier Service Center in Alpharetta went above and beyond expectations in all areas of the interaction. Very fair price....quick install, extremely personable...and knows Porsche's inside out. I have continued on to my first destination before I hit home. Wife and I are near Lookout mountain outside of Chattanooga now and will end up back in ohio by late wednesday night. Car is running wonderfully and I am battling between listening to my radio or the mini symphony I receive via my exhaust. Again thanks for all replies and thank you to Cary at Premier!!!
