According to a local tint shop, instead of a Garbage Bag, peel off what you can then soak with windex, use Seran Wrap to keep the Windex from evaporating. 20-30 minutes later clean up the goo.

That does not sound like a clean or easy way to do it.

True but you do not need to use amonia that may harm your interior

Forget the ammonia, I used a garment steamer and it worked like magic. Just be sure have towels handy since your window will get really wet in the process.

Just steam the area you want to remove tint for a minute or so and the adhesive between the tint and your window will soften up and release the tint. I was able to pull off all tint in large sheets with little tearing. After the tint is pulled off, I used vinegar/water solution to clean up the leftover adhesive.

I was able to pull the tint off of my car in about 30 minutes with minimal fuss using this procedure.

Step 4:
Next, lay a tarp over rear deck and seat, spray ammonia liberally on the inside of the back window. (Ammonia is very strong, I suggest you hold your breath during this step) and cover ammonia soaked tint with the plastic bag so that it won't evaporate.

Why do you people complicate your lives so? All you need is a heat gun. A strong hairdryer would probably work. No need for any fluids, even the water from a steamer.

Thanks so much for your input. This is what I see out of my rear window at dusk:

I am going to pick up a steamer and give this method a try.

Hey VroomGrrl did you ever get around to taking your window tint off?

sempaipaul 12-28-2008 05:42 PM

BEST absolutely BEST way to remove tint is to use a steamer.

ask me how i know.... i am service advisor part time at a detail shop... we do 10 or so of these every week.

Just take a steamer, start at some corner and peel the tint it WILL come off. It will most likelycome off with the glue, if not just steam it up again and use a razor blade.

Paul, will this type of steamer work?

If it does, this would be great. I would really hate to use all of those chemicals so close to my interior..

Thanks,

Hello! No I haven't done it yet. I borrowed a steamer from a friend and have it here. While in the process of getting everything together, I went by an upscale auto service center (the only one in this town) and got a quote on having them remove it - $60. That seemed like it would be well worth it to save myself the time and trouble and mess. So I decided to have them do it.

And I haven't gotten around to it yet! With the additional night driving for winter, it drives me kind of bonkers, too. Given my overall lack of mechanical skill, this and "car wash" pretty much make up my winter project list :)

Here's a video I've done of my first 5 months with my 911 - "Five Months in the Life of a Grrl and Her 911" video

Thanks Vroomgrrl, keep me posted on how it turns out.

You take a razor blade to a rear window with defroster grids in your shop?

sorry didn't clarify that

steam first, the tint MIGHT come off with glue, then steam + razor blade or steel wool on the windows, AND on the back withdow steam + steel wool.

Steel wool will NOT mess anything up, or you can also use a plastic razor blade that is used for removing pinstriping on cars and such.

Most of my tint peeled right up. For the parts that just would not budge, I used 3M's adhesive remover. Took any sticky residue right off.
