Rosewood gets a paint job.....

Started pulling apart the car last weekend. Al dropped by today and we almost finished the disassembly.

Must have a 1000 zip lock bags with "stuff" from the car. I sure hope Al has a better memory than I do.

The car certainly has lost its dignity.

Thanks for Pelican posters and the search tool. Without you guys I would be still out there scratching my head. Mirrors and targa bar cover were relatively easy once you showed me how to do it. Damn Bentley book was dead wrong.

Pulled off the right fender and found some surface rust. Glad we did - I wasn't going to, but Al talked me into it. He told me afterwards that he always wanted to know what held them on. I guess that is what firends are for!!

Will need to do another Pelican search to understand how the rear reflector comes off. It has these goofy little clips holding it on.

Good work! Sure alot of parts to take one apart for painting but the work you're doing will pay off with the quality of the finished job.

A digital camera is also really helpful. My husband can take something apart and put it back together six months later. I on the other hand seem to forget very quickly... So I take pictures and keep a notebook with sketches. I also mark all the ziplock bags with the item I removed the itty bitty parts from (like "front valence" etc).

Post pics of your project as you go - love to see it done up right!

Look Mom, I took it apart!!

Car goes to paint in mid February. Scheduled to be done in mid March. That gives me a month to reassemble before touring season starts up again.

I'll post updates as I progress.

Staying with stock colour - Rosewood Metalic. I do not understand paint. I assume 2 stage is clear coat over paint. Yes, it will be clear coated.

Scooter and Mossguy, thanks for the compliments.

As we took the car apart, found all sorts of grey putty type material the factory used to seal things. I has the same look and feel of Plumber's Putty. Does anyone know what the stuff is and a suggestion of where to get it??

Cheers.

Strip Caulk or "dum-dum" is what you are after. Lordco, Napa or such as it.

Looking like you are making good progress!

Cheers

Very nice Charlie

Good to see another Rosewood repainted in it's original color.

Have you thought about going with the stainless targa bar look or leaving it black?

The targa bar will stay black. I like the stainless look, but not for me.

This will be fun to follow.

Will you be doing the prep work or just the disassembly?

Porsche Crest Butyl Tape Sealant

Charlie V, the sealing tape is used a lot, in the metal building industry. You can get it in a lot of different widths, thickness, etc. It is also used in steel roofing, garages, carports, etc. Do you know what size, thickness X width, and about how many feet of it you will need? It is a butyl rubber sealant, and it is in flat rolls, that you just unwind, and lay in place between certain body panels meet. I have access to just about every thickness X width there is. If you can't find it, let me know, I might already have the size you would need on hand, thanks to Hurricane Katrina. I can't remember if somebody had already explained about the single stage paint vs two stage or dual stage paint. You were correct with your thoughts. Single stage paints= color and gloss in one application, two or dual stage paints= a base color coat application, then a clear top coat application. There can also be some confusion about, two part mixes. This is generally when the color paint or the clear coat requires the use of a catalyst, mixed in to the color paint or the clear coat, to promote hardening. Think of it like you would a two part epoxy, basically the same type principle. If this has already been addressed, I'm sorry for being redundant. Good luck with the paint project.

Glad you are sticking with Rosewood.
I remember when the color first came out and I still like it.

Charlie -

This 3M stuff from Eastwood works very well. I believe this is what we used on our 71 some years ago.

Thanks for the paint explanation. I will discuss in more detail with the body shop.

I picked up a box of Dum Dum Strip Caulk made by PRO FORM at a local supply outlet. 2 lbs for $15.
