Is it just me ....

or is there a new wave of trolls/stupid posts coming our way these days. Just on the first page I find these two:

911/993 Conversion

to 911 or not to 911 DIY question

and then there is alreaday legendary episode last week with the WW (upside down) incident that forced some hands here on the board. I am glad though there was a follow-up clearing it up. (No link provided - let's keep the noise down sir, will you!!!)

Maybe it is time to write a little newbe section that encourages people to introduce themselves properly and also cover some of the fundamentals of this board. Don't get me wrong - we have all started as total novices but then again some of these posts are just too obvious. And when they are being followed up by some bot sh|t peddling internet businesses it starts to smell.....

Merry Christmas
Ingo

There has been a few trolls posting the same "runscape" posts. One poster was taken car of not too long ago and this new one, wewetq0247838 posted crap on 4 threads back to back (they were all grouped together). I sent a message to Wayne to delete them earlier today.

its just you.

sorry, could not resist. im still trying to figure out the do's and dont's. this can be a very bad place for just saying one wrong word, or 2, WW. (been wanting to use that one).
i guy here in town sent his car/motor off to WW, i called him yesterday to see if he got it back (the WW this week reminded me of him). i am scared to death to even mention someone MAY have gotten a good motor, although i have not seen/heard it.

i guess it does not bother me.

WTH is a troll post? I'm assuming a ploy to segue into some sort of AD or website? The second one you mentioned sure got the boys on deck last week.

Curious,

I think a troll is someone who knowingly posts under a false pretense. Intentions vary greatly. Some are just to steer the pot by expressing an unpopular opinion and then sit back and watch the fun unfold. It's like throwing a fire cracker into a staple of race horses.

Others peddle internet crap - this is mostly done by bots that automatically register and post. Could also be cheap labour, who knows.

I signed up and had no idea what the rules or guidelines were and am still figuring it out. It would be good to have a header for newbies unless it exists and I missed it.

Personally, I don't care if someone posts something that I think is "stupid". Who am I to judge?

I can not control what people ask, how they ask it, or force them to use the search button. It is much easier to simply look at the post and make a decision to offer valuable advice or simply move along without saying a word.

Recently I feel like I am walking on egg shells around here. One wrong move and it becomes a flame session. God forbid I say something "wrong" or "stupid".

Did you edit your first post? The first link now brings me to a different thread. Earlier it brought me to a thread when spam poster asked questions about something called "runscape" having nothing to do with porsches and obviously was posted by some sort of automated program. That was what I was referring to. The two links now bring me to threads that look legitimate. Keep in mind there are a lot of newbies on this BBS that may not know as much as many of the posters here. Give them a chance and try to answer their questions.

I agree with you. But I think the tone on the forum started going more negative and in some cases frankly rude about two years ago. More recently it has gotten worse.

I think if we call people on inappropriate behavior it will stop. But we have to draw that line otherwise people won't find it themselves. Some of the personal nature of the attacks is really disappointing.

Lame threads are one thing, they'll happen and heck, I am probably guilty of starting a few myself but my hope is that we'll treat each other, an especially the more tenured members, with respect.

Like Mom always said 'remember the golden rule'.

There does not seem to be an "Introduce yourself" thread on this forum-perhaps that would help? Using the 'Search' function is a learned thing--but unless you know some of the appropriate terms it can be frustrating--For instance, when I first became interested in getting a 911 I was unaware of the term "Backdating" this made finding out how to change the look of a later car to pre 74 almost impossible. Once I learned the term the Porsche world opened up to me!

Also, these are just cars, this is just a hobby....

as more non-technical posts and pure off-topic garbage accumulates it becomes more and more difficult to get useful information in this 911 Technical Forum by using the search facility.

That means more and more people will have to post a question and then more duplication of posts occur, causing a cascade of more and more posts on the same ol' sh*&^*.

I apologize I shouldn't have assumed: 'treat others as you would like to be treated'. Nobody can get this one right all the time but we sure should attempt it with each other since this is hobby and therefore should be F-U-N! (I will remind myself of that next time I am stuck on a mechanical project)

i started that second thread and fail to see your problem with it.. yes i am new to 911's admittedly (so what?) and i asked a question regarding maintenance difficulties unique to the 911 vs more traditional cars. this is a technical forum am i correct?

now speaking of stupid threads, imagine the stupid idiot who posted this thread Is it just me ....

something like that belongs in the general discussion forum if anything because there is nothing technical or 911 about it. You propose a "newbe" section? god forbid someone new to 911's ask a technical question that may have been covered at some time before and you might waste .5 secs reading it. judging by this thread you're the type of lamer who would waste another 5 minutes to senselessly flame the asker just because online you can be a tough guy and may know or think you know alot about these cars.

now as someone new to this forum and relatively new to 911's i would like to say that the largely held public opinion that these cars are owned by "cocks" and elitist jerk-offs is perpetuated by people like you and threads like this. The responses i received in the thread i posted were helpful, insightful, encouraging, and raised the status of the 911 and its community in my eye. You on the other hand have undermined all of that because now owning a 911 would mean i am associated with the likes you and the stereotype does hold at least some water.

my Dr. Phil opinion, find someone in real life to complain too, leave the technical forum for 911 or at least car related questions. you have become the dreaded troll you speak of

Smile Just $.02 in defense of the new bee

I have been buying parts from PP for 5-6 years now, I’ve been reading the forum for the last 3 years and have been registered for the last two. I’ve gained a whole lot of valuable information from this sight. I live in Lower Slower Delaware and don’t even know anyone else who owns a Porsche. Occasionally you will see the newer porches drive thru during tourist season, but never an older one. So I have been extremely grateful to those who have set up this web sight and to those who contribute to it. As far as I know Porsche only exist out there in Cali-for-nia, and the one that I own. Golly Sergeant Carter will ya look at that!

I introduced myself to the “forum” when I first came on here, but I seriously doubt that anyone reading this right now remembers that. I posted pictures of my car and was careful not to butt in were I wasn’t needed. I’ve just kept reading and cataloging all this great info in my head. I still have less than 50 posts.

IMHO there are too many people on this sight that post too much “static”, “interference”, “gibber/jabber” what ever you want to call it. One liners. You have to weed thru the tall grass to get to the good stuff.

I would venture to say that @ 15% of what is posted in the Technical Forum is actually technical, the rest of it is a lot of one liners, a lot of jibber jabber. A lot of times someone will answer a question without really having read the posters initial question. They come in at the end of a four day post and wind up reading something that someone else is going off on and it doesn’t even relate to the posters initial question.

Maybe there should be a 5000 post plus Forum and the new bees would need a secret password. It would be a double coded word to be sure that only those worthy were allowed access. I don’t know the answer; I do my best trying not to become part of the problem. We all have enough of those.

I do know that patience is something that seems to be disappearing from the world as we know it.

FWIW I didn't find anything inappropriate about porker or tharbert1's posts. Not everyone understands the Search function, and sometimes searches (for whatever reason) don't yield the desired results.

Umm, when someone post a question that has been covered it allows newer members or members who have not seen some of the archived posts to offer their thoughts and experiences. Which is good!

it is not always the "same old sh*^&^*..........

I never understood the point of posting "use the search function". To me that says that all the useful info has been posted, no one else has anything to offer, pass the nuts....

But then again I can't understand posting "subsribing"?!:!

Cheers
