IROC, 73 RSR, 74 3.0 RS, Turbo build ???
A found a 84 Factory Turbo Look w LSD and 250k miles.
It runs well, leaks some, has the 7&8 Fuchs, and the interior is shot. What would you do with it? 74 Carrera 3.0 RS 74 IROC 73 RSR back date Keep it mostly stock and clean it up. Turbo & inter-cool it (915 transmission?). DE car that can be driven to the track. I can do my own suspension, bolt ons, and motor assembly if needed but would send out the big work and body work. Budget is about $10-15k. A picture is worth a thousand words! |

I'd go with the 74 IROC look..
Being a Factory Turbo Look car (M491) I would want to minamize the expense of changing so many panels, and keep the pieces you swap so that you can return it back to stock if need be. I would of course do the IROC tail and bumpers, add aero mirrors, Lindsey Fuchs, and H4s. Since you said the inerior is shot.. why not do a rollbar, RS carpet kit and door panels along with Recaro seats of some kind. Ok, so that's just my thoughts... P- |
10-15K is the limit huh? got a pic?
I would like to see more 74 IROC style cars on the road. with a duck too how much do you think it would cost to get your suspension where you want it? |
74 IROC, keep the flag mirrors, duck tail, Carrera graphics, 17" fuchs, roll cage, perlon RS carpet,Leather RS america Door panels, retro style sport seats in leather
|
M491s have the potential to increase in value and with your budget you are not going to get too far with an IROC clone. I would invest the budget in a top quality restoration and save one more original Porsche for posterity.

74 Iroc. :)

True but at 250k miles? who will pay top price ? Its time for fun for this car depends on what you want for the long run 911st |
Iroc it, keep the original stuff all together and wrapped up neatly.
get some big 17's to fill out the wheel wells With 250k , as others said, not much value for a LONG time chip, exhaust, muffler to the tired, but probably still decent running 3.2 |
Here's a shot of our Carrera RS look race car.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1215562563.jpg

Gumba..
Nice car, you got clear lenses on the back? |
I was running R lights but went back to stock. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1215623553.jpg

Nice shot of those rears..
Thanks, |
I do love the 74 IROC!
Thus, I am leaning toward: Keep Red paint w yellow(?) Fuchs and graphics. May have to keep the sunroof as I think it would eat up a bunch of money to get it gone. ($4k???) The dream would be about 2400 lbs, 3.5 w cams, headers, chip, A/C and DE capable suspension. Except for the deep rear rims, is there any real difference between the 74 RS 3.0 and the IROC that I would be concerned with? |
mmmm, I very partial to the SC RS - as I state here :-)

I have always loved the SC/RS.
Right after your first post I did quite a bit of poking around the Internet. I think of the SC/RS of being more of a back roads type of car w a bunch of stuff in the interior. Dose anyone make a SC/RS front bumper? |
My 2 cents....DE car that can be driven to the track.

Body wise I thought he RS and IROC where the same. Though I think the IROC's came with a ducktail that got swapped out. We run 11x17's w/315's on the rears for street & track.
Ours had a sunroof which we replaced with a c/f roof. The sunroof frame, roof panel, motor etc totaled about 39 lbs. If you plan on driving it to the track then it would need to pass smog which hinders what you can do to the motor. You say 3.5, but is that a turbo or na? A turbo motor would be fun for the track, but not very good for a/x. Our car is registered for the street. Current set up is 3.4 twin plug, pmo's, etc., 2350 lbs. On a different note we have a '79 930/DP935. This has a 3.5 twin plug, approx. 400 crank h.p. with all the smog stuff in place and legally passes smog. Also has SSI's but no a/c. That car weighs 2850 lbs. There's a DP on my site with a claimed weighted of 2550 lbs. So, unless you really gut the car 2400 lbs. would be tuf. The least expensive alternative would be to put a stock 3.6 motor in. It would pass smog, and you could get around 300 h.p. Freshen up the suspension and go have fun. |
I would go IROC with all fiberglass race-layup panels and a roll cage. The M491 has the better suspension geometry already. If you use Dzus fasteners and fiberglass, cone rash or off-track damage is no big deal. The car will be really light too.
It depends on how far the track is if you have to drive it there, though. Sometimes you can find people with trailers that have extra room to rent out. If you do IROC fiberglass tail and front spoiler vs 73 RS and ducktail, you gain some good downforce. I would get a good reliable 3.0 aluminum case without induction and go for carbs if an MFI RS spec 2.7 was not an option. You know my car, so I really don't have to say anything else:rolleyes: I don't want to be boring and go on and on about my car. |
Factory wide body? Not too many of those. My vote goes to restoring that puppy...
