Rear Parcel Shelf - Build it yourself

Greetings,

After spending most of my time and money on engine, suspension and brakes, I'm now going to spend some time and money on the interior. My 85 Targa has the square A/D/S speakers in the rear parcel shelf (aka rear speaker deck) and they need to be replaced. Unfortunately since the hole cut-out for the A/D/S's are so large, I can't find speakers that will fit right in.

Thus my choices are to either buy a new rear parcel shelf, fabricate some type of plates to go over the current cut-outs, which I can then mount new/smaller speakers or build my own rear parcel shelf.

My question is, has anyone built their own rear parcel shelf? I'd like to try doing this myself, and would like to see if it's been done and if so, does anyone have instructions with pictures.

Thanks.

If replacement speakers were available would you be interested? Please send me the cutout dimensions, existing speaker dimensions and photo of the parcel shelf and I can see what replacements are available. Photo to sblanket@pacbell.net

Charles

It's a challenging build, with a lot of trial test fit, cut, re-fit, re-cut..etc type of work. Mine has a system of support blocks and lightweight wood, and wooden rings to support the speakers. These are oversize I think 7" Infinity Kappa speakers.
