Timing chain off the main sprocket
How do you get the timing chain back on the main sprocket? While screwing with the timing, I managed to run it off somehow and I don't really see how to get in there to put it back on.

What the manual would say is split the case:eek::mad:
Try everything you can think of like long, thin screwdrivers, dentist mirrors, needle-nose pliars, but you are basically left to your own devices. Sorry:( |
I seem to do this every time, on the left side. It is a real pain in the ass if the inner chain ramps are installed. Piece of cake without 'em. It can be done with them in, though. It involves rotating the engine on the stand to just the rate angle, and then diddling around in there with a really long screwdriver. I can't explain it any better. But I can assure you, it can be done.
Speaking of things to avoid - keep a steady hand when dealing with the sprocket pin and the woodruff key. They WILL go into the crankcase if given an opportunity. Sorry if I've mentioned this before. I'm still...scarred...from an experience I will not speak of. |
For a chain with a master link, rotate the engine so that the chain opening is face up. take your chain, feed it down to the sprocket. Take a bent coat hanger, hook on to the chain from the other side of the sprocket, fish it out or have someone rotate the engine pulley while you keep hooking on the chain until you can pull it out.
For continuous chain that slips off, I don't know. |
You have to get the connecting rods oriented just right then you can slip it back on. If you don't there is not enough room between the gear and the rod.Not that big of a deal. Pause and take deep breath.

you can get to the left one through the drain plate hole, 3.0 and earlier.

Thanks guys... after spinning the engine around on the stand and dangling the chain around I managed to get it to hook up. I'm back on track for the timing again.
