Carmel Valley Road
I have driven to Carmel every year for 17 years+ with the family in the SUV, going through Salinas. This will be the first time that they will go without me and then I will drive up later in my 911. So, of course, Carmel Valley Road is on my itinerary.
I have driven some of the Road from the Carmel side, but never from the start. I see two ways to pick it up. The shorter way of catching it in the middle by taking Laureles from the 68 near Laguna Seca, or the very long way of getting it at Elm Avenue in Greenfield. I've been deceived by these internet maps before. Has anyone taken it from Elm? Is that just too long and windy? (Is there such a thing as too long and windy? ;-) Note that I won't get to Elm until I've been driving for about 4.5 hours already. Thanks, Jay Last edited by Jay Laifman; 07-16-2008 at 08:49 AM.. |

Take it from Greenfield. If you come over the Laureles grade, the rest of the road into Carmel is pretty much straight. It is faster from Greenfield to Carmel by taking 101 to 68, but that is boring. Yes, I am originally from Monterey.

Oh one more note: the car that started my 911 lust was first seen by me on Arroyo Seco road, which is on the route. It was a silver RS replica (hell it could have been real). That is as much of an endorsement as I can give!

Might check fire status before you try this. I'm pretty sure it's ok now but I believe Carmel Valley Rd was partly closed for a time.

I took it all the way in from Greenfield last year in a Prius in the dark, and the whole time kept thinking 'I wish I were in my 911.' There are many tight turns and some potholes that you'll want to avoid, but there are a lot of stretches that would be really fun in a 911.

I just moved from that area last November. I miss driving on Carmel Valley road. Great turns once you get past Carmel Valley (town center). Just watch out for the wild life on the sides.
I also loved to drive Laures Grade. I'm not a big fan of 68 due to lights and traffic. You've got to hit 1 and take it through Big Sur as well. Just my 2 cents, Matt
