911-SC CV joint reassembly problem

I am reassembling an SC CV joint after a bolt loosening axle failure. After you take off the snap ring and take off the splined CV joint, there is a cupped axle washer (Schnoor) under the cv joint. The Haynes manual says to face the hollow side of the schnoor washer towards the base plate. When I face the hollow side of the washer towards the tire, the snap ring wont fit in the groove. It seems the only way to make the snap ring fit the groove is to face the hollow end towards the transmission. Anyone run into this problem? Also is it ok to use blue loctite to secure the 6- 8mm bolts that hold the u- joint together? thanks PS its very embarassing to have a half shaft fall off and get stranded.

I believe the cupped washer faces the CV joint. In this position, it makes a tight fit between the snap ring and the joint. Shouldn't be a problem. With the axle in a vise, you place the cupped washer on the shaft, concave side facing up. Then the joint. then the snap ring. You use a large socket to 'seat' the snap ring.

Some folks drill and wire these fasteners. Hard to argue with that. Many have come loose. Blue loctite is one solution of course, but not mine. Be sure to use new Schnoor washers. New bolts are a good idea also. Torque them as though they were head bolts or flywheel bolts. Torquing them evenly, in steps, until final torque. This should keep them on.

+1 Fit the snap ring as close as you can and whack it with a socket and it should pop home. A little disconcerting, but once it seats you will smile.
