I have the alternator out and was wondering if it would be worth it to just replace the regulator since the alternator was overcharging. I can get the regulator from our host for $61 and the local shop I took it to said it would be a minimum of $100 to fix if it is just the regulator (I think he saw the Porsche label). What are the chances that something else beside the regulator is bad? I found another shop that says they will rebuild it for $110 with a 6 month warranty.

They should be able to bench-test it there. Stick around to witness the test. Around $100 sounds about right. A dealer will want you to install a new unit at $500 or so. A shop will charge you at least double the electric shop's estimate.

A warranty provides some comfort. I admire your patience to take this step by step instead of taking the plunge for new parts.

While you're in there..........

I appreciate everyones help with this.

Do a very thourough inspection of the fan housing/shroud. Look for cracksin the magnesium casting. I will cross my fingers for you. This seems to be a very weak part in Carreras.

Well, the bearings in the alternator can wear. The slip rings can go out of round. But usually, the regulator goes bad. Porsche made a mistake putting the regulator 2" from the hot engine-- when the engine is turned off and airflow stops it really heat-soaks the reg. HEAT is the enemy of electrical components.

Don't overtighten the strap, this is what cracks the housing.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery before doing any alternator work-- you don't want the positive cable contacting ground = 800 amp arc welder.

This might help...

was the problem solved?

hi
did you solve the problem with a new alternator and batter?

Yes,
I finally got the engine back together and it is working great. It actually seems like my windows roll up faster as well.
