Headlights Not Working the Same....

Searched and came up empty............

H4 Bosch headlights.

Key off......If I pull my light switch on to the first stop (aka running lights), my left side headlight lights up with a low intensity beam. My right side does not light at all. If I pull the switch to full on, same thing. All other lights both front and rear work in either position.

Key on.......When pulled to the first stop (running lights) the left beam lights dimly and the right not at all. When the switch is pulled to full on, both headlights come on with full strength beam and work properly in both low beam and bright beam lever position.

Why?

Is the H4 beam supposed to work in 3 modes? If so, then my left side needs to be changed, if not, then why is my right side lighting in running light position?

Is it a sealed unit or can the bulb be changed without changing the lens?

Does your H4 have a city light inside the main headlight. The European ones do. If so, the right side city light is either not hooked up or burned out.

From the way it is working, I would guess so, but I would have to remove the assembly to find out, no? (can't really see in through the lens)

It is not a sealed beam.

H4 lights have removable bulbs.

Sounds like you have "City Lights" - the low intensity light (so you have the 'euro' H4 lights, not the 'sugar scoop' H4 lights).

Which headlights do you have?

The right side city light bulb may be burnt out.

Or you may have the turn signal switch moved to the L position, which will light the left lights while parked, but not the right side.

Make sure the turn signal switch is centered, then try again. If both sides light, you're ok.

If 'euro' lights, and the centered turn signal lever doesn't work, remove the right headlight. There will be 2 bulbs. The big one is the headlight, the small one is the city light, that comes on w/ the parking lights. Replace it. It's a small (4W, I think) bulb.

So which lights do you have? Have a pic?

Well, in taking the housing apart, it appears that at some point in the cars past, the PO had Euro lights installed as there is the H4 & a "city" light. It was NOT a factory job as the wire terminal splice was a little in line job. Little bulb was not burnt out, but it was not getting a good ground.

Fixed it and put it back together and now every single light in the car works as it should!

None of these are "factory jobs". Those lights were not installed on US cars from the factory.

They don't meet DOT standards.

City Lights (and H4's) have all been installed and wired retroactively by owners, or mechanics.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info and the help.
