Starter Again
I have read numerous posts concerning starter problems. I have decided, after much deliberation, to order and replace my starter.Upon securing my horizontal position beneath my car, I noticed that the yellow wire from the ignition switch is not going to the starter solenoid, but to a device located near the starter. The battery cable does go to terminal #30 of the starter, as it is supposed to, then connects to a terminal on the unknown device. There is another wire from the third connector of the unknown device back to the starter solenoid. Some of the wires between this device and the starter were frayed somewhat. I ran new wires and new connectors, plus formulated a ground wire between the engine and starter assembly. I did not, at this time, replace the starter, as I am still unsure as to what this device is . There are no markings that I can see on the device. It does possibly resemble a solenoid, but I am not quite sure. Any assistance in this matter will be appreciated.

It may be an add-on relay to ensure the energizing signal to the solenoid has full source voltage. The previous signal wire is yellow and might be now just a control wire to energize the relay. By using a remote switch, this can reduce ignition switch wear in the crank position.
A picture from down under would confirm this. Here's a similar setup in my car, but I installed the solenoid relay inside the tunnel away from the elements. http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars/RemoteStarter.htm Sherwood |
